Worcester State Defeats Women's Tennis in Season Opener

HOLDEN, Mass. – Sophomore Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and senior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) combined to win at No. 1 doubles, giving the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team its lone point of the day as the Leopards were defeated in their season opener, 8-1, to Worcester State.

The Lancers picked up the first two points of the match as freshmen Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) opened the day with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over sophomore Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.) and junior Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.). No. 3 doubles saw sophomore Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Abbey Tavares (Berkley, Mass.) defeat freshman Kirsten Gramajo (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine), 8-3.

Worcester State swept singles play to add to its lead as Mullane defeated DeLuca, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 and Konicki gave the hosts a 4-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gramajo at No. 6. Costa clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Erickson at No. 5.

Sophomore Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) defeated Deakin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4, while Butts was bested by sophomore Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. Sollecito won her first set against Alves at No.1, 7-5, however lost the second set, 6-7 (3-7). In the tiebreaker set, Alves took the match with a 10-4 win.

Wentworth is at Suffolk on Thursday night while Worcester State is idle until playing Bridgewater State on Sept. 15.
