Women's Tennis Tripped up at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Western New England Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bears got a pair of 8-2 wins to complete a 3-0 sweep in doubles play. Junior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with an 8-0 win over sophomores CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and Beverly LaChapelle (Caracas, Venezuela) at No. 3. No. 2 doubles saw senior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and sophomore Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) defeat sophomore Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.) and junior Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.), 8-2. Sophomore Maylene LaPress (Goffstown, N.H.) teamed with junior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) to earn an 8-2 win over sophomore Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and senior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) at No. 1.

Singles play saw Martinelli defeat Deakin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 before Schrader defeated Sollecito at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the match for Western New England. At No. 6, Palumbo bested Erickson, 6-0, 6-0, Bauer defeated LaChapelle at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2, Cote was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over DeLuca at No. 3, and Martinelli defeated Butts at No. 2, 6-0, 7-5.

Wentworth (0-8, 0-4 CCC) is at Salve Regina on Saturday.
