Salve Regina Doubles up Women's Tennis

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Taking a 2-1 lead into singles play, the Salve Regina University women's tennis team won four of six flights and defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play at the Mt. Auburn Club.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve Regina took a 1-0 lead with a win at No. 3 doubles as sophomore Makenzie Sadler (Mystic, Conn.) teamed with senior Shealyn FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) for an 8-2 win over juniors CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.). The Seahawks took a 2-0 lead when the No. 1 tandem of sophomore Lauren Harvey (Edmond, Okla.) and freshman Delaney Pothier (Mattapoisett, Mass.) topped junior Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Morgan Collins (Warwick, R.I.), 8-5. Wentworth cut into the lead when junior Olivia DeLuca (Dunstable, Mass.) and senior Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) bested senior Lily Gorman (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and junior Annemarie Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.), 8-5.
  • The Seahawks took the first three points of singles play to clinch the match. At No. 3, Pothier defeated McGibbon, 6-0, 6-0, Gorman won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1, over Deakin to make it 4-1, while Sadler's 6-1, 6-1 win over DeLuca at No. 2 clinched the match.
  • Sollecito picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Harvey at No. 1, Haas was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Erickson at No. 5, and Collins bested FitzPatrick, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4.
