Women's Volleyball Finishes Sixth at NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the 2011 New York University Labor Day Invitational to finish sixth in the eight-team field. The Leopards defeated Bridgewater State, 3-1, to earn a spot in the fifth-place match before falling to Albion, 3-0, to close out the tournament.

Wentworth took a 25-21 win the opening set against Bridgewater State (0-3), using four kills from junior Erica Wright (West Hartford, Conn.) and three kills apiece from senior Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Texas) and junior Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.). The Bears evened the match at a set apiece with a 25-18 win in the second set before the Leopards, despite a .000 attack percentage, pulled ahead 2-1. A solid attack in the fourth set gave Wentworth a 25-20 win and its first win of 2011.

Bruton finished the match with nine kills, two blocks, and 13 digs, while Rahilly and Wright each had eight kills. Wright added two aces, four blocks and five digs, while Rahilly had 10 digs. Junior Rebecca Williams (Brockton, Mass.) had 27 assists in the win.

The fifth-place match saw the Britons (2-2) take a 25-23 win in the opening set, before Albion completed the sweep with a 25-18 win in the second set and a 25-17 win in the third set. Wentworth recorded just nine kills for the match, with five of them coming in the opening set.

Freshman Sam Burgner (Dalton, Mass.) had three kills and a pair of blocks, while Bruton and Rahilly had a pair of kills apiece Freshman Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) and Williams had a team-high nine digs with Bruton adding six digs. Williams also had eight assists.

The Leopards stand at 1-3 and travel to Worcester State on Wednesday night.
