Women's Volleyball Takes Third at SJC Invitational

STANDISH, Maine – Slitting a pair of matches on Saturday, the Wentworth women's volleyball team finished third at the 2011 SJC Autumn Invitational, hosted by St. Joseph's. The Leopards fell to Husson, 3-1, before defeating Lyndon State, 3-0, for the second time in less than a day.

Against Husson the two teams split the first two sets, with the Eagles taking the opener, 25-22, and the Leopards claiming the second set, 25-21. Husson used a 25-20 win in the third set to break the stalemate before closing out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Wentworth was paced by senior Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Texas), who had 11 kills, 17 digs, five blocks, and three aces. Sophomore Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) added nine kills and eight digs in a winning effort while junior Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.) had five kills, three aces, and 11 digs, and junior Erica Wright (West Hartford, Conn.) had four kills and five blocks.

In the tournament's third-place match, Wentworth rolled to a sweep, not allowing the Hornets to reach double digits in any of the sets (25-6, 25-5, 25-5). Bruton had five kills and five aces, while Rahilly and Hobbs had three kills apiece. Freshman Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.), who recorded 26 assists in the loss to Husson, had 11 assists in the win over Lyndon State.

At 4-5, Wentworth travels to Emmanuel on Tuesday night.
