Women's Volleyball Takes Two at Kings Point

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the 2013 campaign as the Leopards closed out play at the Kings Point Invitational with a 3-1 win over Farmingdale State and a 3-0 win over CCNY. With the two wins Wentworth finishes second behind the host Mariners.

WENTWORTH 3, FARMINGDALE STATE 1
The Leopards and Rams battled back and forth in the opening set, a set that would see 14 ties and seven lead changes before a late 5-2 spurt by Wentworth gave the Leopards a 25-22 win. Sophomore Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) and freshman Sheena Dignean (Constantia, N.Y.) had four kills apiece for the Black & Gold while junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had nine digs.

Wentworth increased its lead to 2-0 as the Leopards took a 25-18 win in the second set. Sophomore Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) had five kills and two aces, while Curran had six digs. After the score was tied 10-all Wentworth used a 15-8 spurt, capped off by a Bailey kill, to win the set.

Farmingdale took the third set by a 27-25 score in a back and forth affair that saw 10 ties. The Rams held a 21-17 lead before a Bailey kill, a freshman Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) ace, and a pair of Farmingdale errors tied the score at 21-all. The Leopards staved off set point twice, however the Rams took advantage of a Wentworth error and a kill to earn the close win. Bailey had four kills and four digs and Curran added six more digs.

The Leopards pulled away late in the fourth set, capped off by a Dignean kill, to take a 25-21 win and win the match, 3-1. Bailey added five more kills as Wentworth hit a match-high .267.

Bailey recorded her second straight double-double, recording 16 kills and 14 digs to go along with a pair of aces.Young had nine kills, hit .308, and added three aces, Dignean had seven kills, two aces, and 10 digs, Junton had 33 assists, a pair of blocks, and three aces, and Curran finished with 24 digs.

WENTWORTH 3, CCNY 0
Wentworth carried the momentum of the win over Farmingdale into its second match of the day, taking the first set by a 25-11 score. The Black & Gold raced out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back as Bailey and Dignean had five and four kills, respectively.

The Leopards raced out to a 10-2 lead in the second set, only to have the Beavers use a 14-5 run to take a 16-15 lead on an attack error. The set would be tied three more times before Wentworth took the lead for good at 19-18 and went on to take a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead. Bailey (four kills, four digs), Dignean (three kills, three digs), and Hunton (two aces) paced the Leopards in the second set.

Wentworth closed out the match in quick fashion in the third set by jumping out to a 13-1 lead and holding the Beavers to just seven points in a 25-7 win. Freshman Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had four kills in the set, while Bailey added three more.

Bailey had 12 kills, hit .370, and had seven digs in the win, while Dignean had eight kills, hit .400, had two aces, and added seven digs. Niham finished with six kills, Hunton served five aces, Curran had 11 digs, and junior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 25 assists. The Black & Gold hit .325 for the match, while holding CCNY to .099.

Two Leopards were named to the all-tournament team as Bailey (41 kills, 35 digs) and Hunton (61 assists, 11 aces, 18 digs) were honored.

Wentworth improves to 2-1 and is at Lasell Tuesday night.
