Women's Volleyball Splits Two Matches

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday in a tri-match hosted by Emerson. The Leopards rallied to defeat Lesley, 3-1, in their first match before being swept, 3-0, by the host Lions in the second match

MATCH ONE:  Wentworth 3, Lesley 1
In the first of two meetings this season between the Leopards and the Lynx, Wentworth dropped the opening set by a 25-18 score after hitting .000 and allowing Lesley to hit .281. While the set saw seven ties, Wentworth never led and sophomore Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) and freshman Erin Patterson (Roseville, Calif.) combined for four of the Leopards seven kills. Freshman Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) and junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had seven and six digs, respectively.

The Black & Gold evened the match at a set apiece with a 25-19 win in the second set, using eight service aces to counter a negative hitting percentage. Junior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) and Hunton combined to serve seven of Wentworth's eight aces. Hunton and classmate Sheena Dignean (Constantia, N.Y.) had a pair of kills each while Curran had four digs.

Wentworth took a 2-1 lead with a 25-21 win in the third set as freshman Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had a team-high three kills, Hunton had two aces, and Curran had 11 digs. In the fourth set the Leopards closed out the match by hitting a match-high .238 as sophomore Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) had five kills, Young added four, and Patterson added three kills and five digs.

Bailey and Patterson had eight kills apiece to pace the Leopards while Young added six. Hunton served six aces and 13 digs and Curran had a match-high 24 digs. Ponce finished with 28 assists and four assists.

MATCH TWO:  Emerson 3, Wentworth 0
The host Lions won the opening set by a 25-9 score and never looked back, holding the Leopards to an attack percentage of -.125 for the match, while hitting .280 as a team. Dignean had two of the Leopards' three kills in the opening set.

In the second set, Bailey recorded a pair of kills and six digs as the Leopards were defeated, 25-15, before Emerson completed the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third set. The third set saw Young and Dignean each record two kills and sophomore Stephanie Nguyen (Medford, Mass.) have four digs.

Dignean and Bailey each recorded four kills, with Bailey also having a team-high 11 digs. Young had a pair of blocks, Curran had two aces, and Ponce recorded 10 assists to go over 1,000 for her career.

Wentworth sits at 5-4 and hosts Suffolk on Tuesday night.
