Women's Volleyball Win Streak Snapped

NEWPORT, R.I. – Senior Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) recorded 19 kills, 13 digs, and four blocks to help pace the Salve Regina women's volleyball team to its sixth straight win, 3-1 over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

The Seahawks, who won their sixth straight match to improve to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in CCC play, hit over .200 in each of the four sets, beginning with .225 in the opening frame. Salve Regina raced out to a 5-0 lead and would lead by as many as eight (9-1) in the early going. The Leopards would pull back within five, however the hosts would score five of the last six points to take a 25-15 win.

Wentworth evened the match at a set apiece with a 30-28 win in the second set. The Leopards battled back from a pair of early deficits, and with the Seahawks serving for the set, forced an attack error to tie the set at 25-all. Neither team could hold off a counter attack by the opposition until, with the score tied at 28-all, the Leopards forced an attack error and got a service ace from freshman Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) to take the set.

Salve Regina took the third set, 25-12, thanks in part to hitting .545 – recording 13 kills on 22 swings – before closing out the match by hitting .407 in the fourth set, a 25-18 win.

Junior Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) added 14 kills and 10 digs, while classmate Katelyn Beauregard (Dartmouth, Mass.) chipped in with 10 kills. Junior Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) had three aces and 48 assists.

Sophomore Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) led the Leopards with a 14-kill, nine-dig performance. Freshman Sheena Dignean (Constantia, N.Y.) added 12 kills and six digs and sophomore Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) had nine kills and hit .360. In addition to serving four aces, Hunton had 13 digs, tying her for the team high with junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.). Junior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 40 assists on the day.

The Leopards see their four-match win streak come to an end and are at Endicott on Tuesday.
