Curran Repeats on Academic All-District Team

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior libero Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® Women's Volleyball Team for a second consecutive season.

The 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® Women's Volleyball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

Curran played in all 28 of the Leopards' matches and appeared in all 95 sets. She established a single-season record of 427 digs this year, besting her own mark of 404 from a season ago and matched a career-best 51 service aces, leading the team in that category. Among Commonwealth Coast Conference players she ranked fourth in digs and digs per set (4.49) and seventh in service aces and service aces per set (0.54). The Leopards finished the season with a 14-14 record, marking the second straight season they have finished with a .500 or better record.

A Biomedical Engineering major and four-year starter, Curran played in 106 matches (371 sets) over her career and is the program's all-time leader with 1,414 digs, while ranking fifth all-time in service aces with 154. She is also the program leader in digs per set (3.81) and is eighth with 0.59 service aces per set. She is also the starting shortstop on the Leopard softball team and earned Second Team Capital One Academic All-America® honors last season.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

The Academic All-District® are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the fourth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America ® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
