SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) combined for 31 kills and eight blocks over two matches as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team concluded play at the Scranton Invitational. The Leopards dropped both matches, falling to Union by a 3-0 score before suffering a 3-1 setback to Pitt.-Bradford.
In the match against Union, the Leopards would hit .138 in the opening frame, however the Dutchwomen hit .438 and took a 25-15 win/ Bailey and Young each had two kills in the set.
The second set saw Young record four kills on eight attempts with zero errors while sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) had a pair of kills. After Union had hit for a match high in the opening set, the Dutchwomen were held to .058. Union had a 24-23 lead, however a Meyers ace staved off set point before Union converted two straight points to take the 26-24 win.
Wentworth was forced to hit -.074 in the third set, despite another four kills from Young, and was defeated 25-17.
Young finished with 10 kills, while Bailey and Meyers had five and four, respectively. Sophomore Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) served three aces, freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had 18 digs, classmate Abagail Ahern (Barrington, N.H.) had 10 digs, and junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) had 20 assists.
Against Pitt.-Bradford, Wentworth took a 25-14 win in the opening set behind four kills from Bailey. Despite Bailey recording five kills in the second frame, the Panthers evened the match with a 25-19 win and took a 2-1 lead in the third set with a 25-21 win. Pitt.-Bradford closed out the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.
Bailey had 12 kills and three blocks while Young had four kills and four blocks. Carlson and Meyers added three kills each and freshman Sarah Hyndman (Encinitas, Calif.), who had two blocks in the Union match, had four blocks in the loss. Clark had 14 digs and Hunton added 21 assists.
Wentworth (1-3) is at Salem State on Tuesday night.
