Women's Volleyball Edges Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) and freshman Sarah Hyndman (Encinitas, Calif.) combined for 18 kills to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team snap a three-match losing streak with a 3-2 win over Salem State in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

With the win the Leopards improve to 2-3 on the season while the Vikings drop their opener.

In the opening set, Wentworth got off to a slow start and would fall, 25-17. The Black & Gold hit -.038 in the set, making 10 attack errors. Senior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) had four kills while sophomore Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) and junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) had four digs each.

The Leopards evened the match at a set apiece with a 25-19 win in the second set as Wentworth hit nearly .300 and forced the Viking to hit -.038. Meyers, junior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut Mass.), and Hyndman had three kills apiece in the set. Wentworth fended off Salem State in the third set to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 win. Meyers continued her streak of three straight sets without committing an attack error as she had four kills while Carlson and freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had three digs).

Salem State forced a deciding fifth set after taking a 25-17 win in the fourth set. For Wentworth, Hyndman had a pair of kills as the Leopards hit -.238 during the set.

In the fifth set, Wentworth dominated, hitting .625 and not committing an attack error on eight swings. The Leopards, who got a pair of kills each from Carlson and Bailey, won 15-3.

Meyers had nine kills, hit .333, and served a pair of aces while Hyndman had nine kills and a pair of blocks. Bailey finished with eight kills while Nihan had seven kills. Hunton had seven assists, five aces, and six digs. Clark had eight assists and seven digs and Carlson had 17 digs.

Wentworth hosts Mount Ida and WPI in a tri-match on Saturday.
