Women's Volleyball Outlasts Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) each registered 12 kills, while junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) tallied a season-high 39 assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team defeated Suffolk University, 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17, 25-16) in non-conference action on Tuesday evening in Tansey Gymnasium.

With the win the Leopards improve to 4-4 while the Rams fall to 2-4.

Leopard freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) recorded a career-best 19 digs, along with a trio of serving aces, while Meyers registered a season-best 14 digs and a team-high four serving aces. Freshman Sarah Hyndman (Encinitas, Calif.) recorded career and season-high marks in kills (10) and serving aces (three).

Suffolk freshman Bridget Allison (Westford, Mass.) recorded a career-best 11 kills and sophomore Liz Kerek (Holbrook, Mass.) registered a season-best 26 assists. Freshman Taila Lombardo (Windham, N.H.) tallied a career and season-best 16 digs and Sophomore Jane Buckley (Plaistow, N.H.) recorded seven kills and one serving ace.

Clark recorded a pair of serving aces midway through the opening set, which helped Wentworth push ahead, 17-11. Suffolk trimmed the deficit with a pair of three-point spurts that brought the visitors within two points (21-19), but it was a ball handling error late in the session that jumpstarted a three-point run for the Leopard that went onto claim the opening stanza.

Suffolk commenced the second set by tallying five straight points, but its lead was short lived as Wentworth rallied back, staying within at least one or two points. The Rams pushed ahead late in the session, but it was Allison, who secured the win with a kill at the net to even the match at 1-1.

The Leopards captured the third set with a 10-1 run late in the session – with eight of those points coming while Hunton was on the line – following a service error and then clinched the match in the fourth stanza following a kill by junior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.). Nihan's kill capped off a 12-3 spurt that helped Wentworth capture the victory.

Both teams return to the court on Thursday, September 17 as Wentworth hosts Lasell College, while Suffolk entertains Anna Maria College with both matches beginning at 7:00 p.m.
