Hawks Rally Past Women's Volleyball

BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) recorded 15 kills to help the Roger Williams University women's volleyball team rally for a 3-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 9-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Leopards dip to 4-10 (0-3).

Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) led Wentworth with six kills, junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) tallied 13 assists and classmate Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) recorded five kills. Sophomore Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) and freshman Sarah Hyndman (Encinitas, Calif.) each tallied five kills and freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) registered 14 digs.

Hawk freshman Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied added 13 kills while senior Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) registered 36 assists and sophomore Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) registered 16 digs.

An early five-point run helped the Roger Williams maintain the lead throughout the opening set, but Wentworth kept pace, erasing the deficit midway through the stanza as a service error against Roger Williams evened the frame at 9-9. Roger Williams would push ahead again, leading 21-15, but Wentworth rallied as back-to-back blocks by sophomore Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) jumpstarted a 10-1 run that provided the visitors with a first-set victory, 25-22.

Roger Williams regrouped in the second set, utilizing a 7-1 run midway through the stanza to push ahead for good. Quilty brought the hosts within two points late in the set with a kill to secure a 23-12 advantage before the Hawks clinched the set (25-12) with back-to-back errors against the Leopards.

The Hawks momentum continued into the third set as a kill by Quilty and service ace by junior Cassandra Minogue (Manorville, N.Y.) pushed the hosts ahead, 13-11. Both teams swapped points over the next few serves before back-to-back attack errors shifted momentum back to the Hawks, which closed out the session on a 9-2 run and won the set 25-17.

A kill by Senior Kristen Neff (Delmar, N.Y.) early in the fourth set resulted in an eight-point spurt that pushed Roger Williams ahead for good. Wentworth did trim the deficit late in the frame with a trio of points, including a kill by Carlson, but Roger Williams countered with a kill by Boyer and service ace by Minogue to clinch the match, 25-11.

Both teams return to action later this week as Wentworth hosts Regis on Thursday, October 1 while Roger Williams travels to Gordon on Friday, October 2 with both matches scheduled to commence at 7:00 p.m.
