Women's Volleyball Picks Up Two Wins

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon as the Leopards defeated Becker and Mass. Maritime, each by 3-0 scores.

At the conclusion of the day the Leopards improve to 7-13 overall, Becker moves to 8-11 and Massachusetts Maritime Academy falls to 4-14.

Wentworth 3, Becker 0: Senior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) registered seven kills and seven digs, junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 16 assists as the Leopards defeated the Hawks in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-11, 25-7.

Wentworth junior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) each tallied six kills, freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) recorded 12 digs, while the Leopards collaborated for .508 hitting percentage.

Senior Samantha Caouette (Montague, Mass.) paced Becker with a team-high three kills, sophomore Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) tallied four assists and freshman Brittney Bullis (Stafford, Va.) recorded 11 digs.

Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) ignited a five-point run in the first set with a kill, pushing Wentworth ahead, 10-3. A service error by Wentworth led to each team swapping points over the next few serves be an attack error against Becker jumpstarted a three-point spurt for the Leopards, which pushed ahead, 21-9. An additional attack error late in the frame secured a 24-11 lead for Wentworth before sophomore Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) concluded the set with a service ace.

A 13-3 run highlighted the second set for Wentworth, securing an 18-8 advantage. A service error against the Black and Gold provided three points for Becker with its ninth point of the session before Wentworth countered with a 7-3 run to close out the frame. The Leopards tallied 16 kills in the second set with no attack errors, hitting .593.

Wentworth jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the third set and never looked back, capping the frame on a 9-4 run. The Leopards recorded seven straight points off Hunton's serves, along with four points late in the session off Carlson's serves.

Becker 3, Mass. Maritime 0: Becker received eight kills from Caouette, 14 assists by Landry and nine digs from junior Marisa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) to defeat the Buccaneers in straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-12.

Becker junior Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.) concluded the match with five kills, four digs and one service ace; Brittney Bullis tallied eight digs and four kills, while Caouette added eight digs.

Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Buccaneers with six kills; classmate Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) contributed five kills, three digs and one service ace, and junior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) registered a team-high 12 assists.

A pair of five-point runs for Becker helped the Hawks claim a 12-7 lead in the opening set. The Buccaneers countered, recording three straight points following an attack error against Becker. A service error later in the set jumpstarted a 7-1 run for the Hawks before the Buccaneers responded with a five-point spurt, initiated by Klangos' kill to bring the visitors within five points (22-17). Mass. Maritime continued to claw back with kills by Klangos, along with a trio of attack errors against the Hawks, but Becker secured the win off a ball handling error against the Buccaneers.
The Buccaneers used a 10-3 run early in the second set to push ahead, 13-10, but Becker countered with a 10-1 run, sparked by an attack error against Mass. Maritime to provide the Hawks with a 20-13 advantage. The Buccaneers trimmed the deficit with a pair of ball handling errors against Becker, along with one kill from Klangos, but the rally was cut short as the Hawks secured their second with on back-to-back attack errors against the Buccaneers.

Becker jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the third and never looked back. Mass Maritime cut the deficit off a service error and attack error to pull within five points (9-4), but the Hawks responded with a 10-3 run to push ahead for good. A bad set by the Buccaneers and kill by senior Ashley Peterson (Johnston, R.I.) put the Hawks in position to clinch the match. Mass. Maritime was charged with a bad set on the ensuing serve, which secured the win for Becker.

Wentworth 3, Mass. Maritime 0:  Meyers and Nihan each recorded six kills, while Hunton registered 12 assists and six digs as the Leopards defeated the Buccaneers by scores of 25-11, 25-21, 25-13.

As a team, the Leopards concluded the match with 26 kills, 21 assists and 13 service aces. Massachusetts Maritime Academy collaborated for 27 digs, 17 kills, 16 assists, and a quartet of service aces. Carlson added seven assists for the Leopards, Meyers totaled four service aces, while Bailey, Shea and junior Jordan Young (Derry, N.Y.) registered a trio of kills.

Freshman Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) paced the Buccaneers with six kills, Ethier registered 12 assists and six digs, while freshman Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.) tallied a trio of service aces.

Wentworth jumped out to an 8-3 lead following a kill by Young that jumpstarted the five-point run. Mass. Maritime trimmed the deficit, pulling within three points (12-9) with a kill by Roy, but Wentworth answered with a 13-4 run to capture the initial set.

Both teams kept things close during the second set as a three-point spurt by the Buccaneers early in the stanza brought the visitors within two points (10-8) following back-to-back errors against the Leopards. A pair of attack errors, along with a service ace by Meyers pushed the hosts ahead, 13-9, but Mass. Maritime kept pace, swapping points down the stretch to pull within one point (22-21) late in the session. The Buccaneers, however, would not register another point as a trio of attack errors against the visitors provided Wentworth with a second set victory.

A 14-5 run early in the third session provided Wentworth with the lead for good. Junior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) and freshman Alexandra Meighan (Quincy, Mass.) helped the visitors trim the deficit with back-to-back kills, but an attack error and kill by Meyers helped Wentworth regain momentum and go onto clinch the match.

Wentworth and Mass. Maritime return to action on Tuesday, October 13 with the Leopards visiting Salve Regina University and the Buccaneers heading to Salem State University with both matches scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. Becker is back in action on Wednesday, October 14 when they entertain Southern Vermont College at 7:00 p.m.
