Balanced Attack Pushes Women's Volleyball Past UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomores Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) and Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) each recorded six kills to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a non-conference match played at the Tripp Athletic Center.

With the win the Leopards improve to 8-14 while the Corsairs fall to 9-15.

Junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) had 11 assists, Carlson added 10 helpers, freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had a career-best 20 digs, and freshman Sarah Hyndman (Encinitas, Calif.) and sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) had five kills apiece in the win. Hyndman also had three blocks.

Freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) tallied a career-high 20 digs, along with a trio of kills, two service aces and five assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team defeated UMass Dartmouth in straight-sets on Thursday evening in non-conference action. The Leopards claimed scores of 26-24, 25-18, 27-25.

UMass Dartmouth senior Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) paced the Corisars with seven kills; junior Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) registered 14 assists and senior Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass.) recorded 17 digs.

A service error early in the opening stanza helped the Black and Gold rally from a three-point deficit, evening the set at 4-4. Both teams continued to trade points over the next few serves, but it was a trio of errors against UMass Dartmouth, which provided Wentworth with a 16-15 lead. Kills by Shea and junior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) pushed the Black and Gold ahead, 19-18, before a service error against the hosts initiated an 8-3 run that helped Wentworth capture the opening set, 26-24.

Wentworth opened the second set with the assistance of an attack error, bad set and kill by Carlson and led 8-5. Both teams traded points following Wentworth's eighth point of the session before a kill by Shea jumpstarted a five-point spurt, pushing the visitors ahead, 14-9. Senior Jasmine Burris (New Bedford, Mass.) halted the run with a kill, but the Leopards responded with a three-point spurt, jumping ahead, 17-10. A kill by Carlson ignited an 8-6 run to conclude the set (25-18) and provide Wentworth with its second victory of the evening.

Clark's service ace and senior Hannah Bailey's (Plymouth, Mass.) kill provided the Leopards with a 10-8 advantage early in the third set. A service error against the visitors helped UMass Dartmouth jump ahead, 13-11, before both teams traded points over the next few serves. A bad set against the Leopards positioned the Corsairs for their initial victory of the evening; however, a kill by Shea sparked a three-point spurt for Wentworth to go onto claim its third and final victory, 27-25.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 17 as Wentworth hosts Curry College at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth heads to Anna Maria College for a tri-match with the AMCATS and St. Joseph (Conn.).
