Women's Volleyball Closes Out Home Slate With Win

BOSTON, Mass. – In her final home match in Tansey Gymnasium senior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team defeated Simmons, 3-1, in a non-conference match played at Tansey Gymnasium.

With the win the Leopards improve to 10-16 on the season while the Sharks fall to 9-15.

Wentworth jumped out to a four-point advantage off a quartet of serves by sophomore Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.), but a service error on her fifth serve provided momentum for the Simmons, which rallied back to pull within seven-points (14-7) midway through the frame. Momentum remained on the Sharks' side following a kill by junior Cailin Frederickson (Columbia, Md.), which resulted in a 9-3 run, bringing the visitors within one point (18-17), however, Wentworth countered with a kill by sophomore Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) that helped the Leopards close out the session on a seven-to-one run and claim a first-set victory of 25-18.

Both teams traded points throughout the opening and middle of the second set before a kill by sophomore Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) resulted in a trio of three-point spurts down the stretch that helped the Sharks claim a 27-25 second set victory. Bailey recorded a pair of kills that evened the session at 24-24 and 25-25, but a service error against the hosts resulted in a three-point burst by Simmons, which was capped with a kill by Woodward.

The third set was back and forth before Bailey's kill helped the hosts go on 14-3 run that helped the Black and Gold claim a third-set victory by a score of 25-17. Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) helped the Wentworth keep momentum on its side with a kill that pushed Wentworth ahead, 18-14, but it was a pair of errors against the Sharks that secured a second win for the Leopards.

A trio of three-point spurts by Wentworth highlighted the final session and helped the hosts secure a fourth-set win by a score of 25-19. Meyers helped the hosts regroup early in the set with a kill that would push Wentworth ahead, 6-3, before a service error against the Sharks helped the Leopards push ahead, 14-8. Simmons trimmed the deficit late in the session with back-to-back kills by Frederickson and senior Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.), but it was a service error and a kill by freshman Sarah Hyndman (Encinitas, Calif.) that helped Wentworth clinch the match.

Meyers also had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, to go along with three aces, while Carlson and Hyndman had six kills apiece. Carlson also had 15 assists and Hyndman added four blocks. Freshman Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had nine kills and five assists, junior Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) had 13 assists and eight digs

Frederickson paced the visitors with 11 kills. Classmate Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) recorded 30 assists and Woodward tallied 10 digs.

Both teams return to action this Saturday, October 31 as Wentworth travels to Western New England for a 1:00 p.m. first serve, while Simmons heads to Saint Joseph's (Maine) for a tri-match with the Monks at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. meeting with Maine Maritime.
