SCRANTON, Pa. – Freshman Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) recorded 25 kills, four aces, and 24 digs over two matches, en route to being named the tournament's most outstanding player, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team captured the 2016 Scranton Invitational title by going a perfect 4-0 on the weekend. On Saturday, the Leopards edged Penn State-Behrend, 3-2, and swept Mount Saint Mary, 3-0.
WENTWORTH 3, PENN STATE-BEHREND 2
Wentworth fell behind after dropping the opening set by a 25-23 score, however quickly regained the lead with a 25-22 win in set two and a 25-20 win in the third set. The Lions would force the deciding set with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, however the Leopards used a convincing, 15-6 win in the fifth set.
Rogoz paced the offense with 16 kills to go along with 18 digs and a pair of blocks while classmate Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) chipped in with six kills, two aces, and 16 digs. Senior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had four kills and six blocks while junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) had 14 assists, five blocks, and 23 digs. Freshman Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) had 17 assists and sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had 25 digs.
The Leopards held the Lions to an attack percentage of less than .100 in three sets, including twice when Penn State-Behrend hit for a negative percent. One of those two times came in the fifth set when the Lions hit -.048.
WENTWORTH 3, MOUNT SAINT MARY 0
The Leopards made quick work of the Knights to complete the weekend at 4-0. In the opening set Rogoz and Quick had a pair of kills each and Rogoz served three aces as Wentworth took a 25-13 victory. Clark had five digs in the frame.
Wentworth hit a match-best .440 in the second set and held its opponent to single digits as the Leopards prevailed, 25-9. Rogoz had four kills, junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) added three, and Carlson served three aces.
Rogoz added three more kills in the third set with Carlson and freshman Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) added two apiece in the 25-17 win.
For the match, Rogoz had nine kills, four aces, and six digs and Shea added five kills. Clark had 17 digs, Carlson served five aces, and Clouse had 11 assists. Wentworth held the Knights to an attack percentage of -.037.
In addition to Rogoz being named the most outstanding player, Carlson earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Wentworth is at Simmons on Tuesday night.
