Balanced Attack Lifts Women's Volleyball Past Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) recorded eight kills, two aces, and 12 digs and classmates Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) had eight and six kills, respectively as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept Lasell, 3-0, in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Winners of two straight, the Leopards improve to 7-1 on the season while the Lasers fall to 3-2.

Wentworth took an early stance in the first set as junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) pushed the visitors to 11-5, highlighted by two service aces. Sophomore Olivia Addington (Orange, Calif.) carried the Lasers into double digits at 17-10 with a kill from junior Lauren Piper (Scarborough, Maine) but the Leopards used a 6-1 run to close out set one, 25-12. Rogoz had three kills and zero errors on 11 swings in the set while Lassiter and junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) had two kills each and sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had eight digs.

Clark and freshman Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) helped the Leopards take control in the second set on the service line and combined for seven opening points. Leading 21-12, Rogoz served up three straight points, as Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) threw down a kill to give the Black & Gold a 25-13 win and a 2-0 lead. In the second set, Wentworth hit a match-high .320 while Lasell hit negatively for the second straight set. Lassiter had three kills on four swings without making an error and Quick added three more kills. Rogoz and Clark had six digs apiece.

The Lasers took control early in the third set and would lead 18-13 before the Leopards began their comeback. With the score 19-16, Clouse served four straight points, including a pair of aces, to make it 20-19 in favor of Wentworth. After an Addington kill tied it up, the Lasers committed a service error with would give Wentworth a 21-20 lead, a lead the Leopards would not relinquish. Quick (five kills) and Rogoz (three kills) paced the offense.

Lassiter finished with an attack percentage of .333 (6-2-12) and also served a pair of aces. Shea had four kills, senior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had three blocks, Carlson had 12 assists and two aces, Clouse had 13 assists, three aces, and six digs, and Clark finished with 19 digs.

Addington led the Lasers with a match-high 12 kills and eight digs.

Wentworth has its home opener on Saturday when the Leopards host Lesley and Worcester State in a tri-match.
