Women's Volleyball Leaps Past Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – Paced by 12 kills from freshman Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) and nine kills from classmate Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.), the Wentworth Institute of technology women's volleyball team ran its win streak to five matches with a 3-0 win over Suffolk in a non-conference match Tuesday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 10-1 on the season, matching the total number of victories from the 2015 season. The Rams fall to 4-5 on the season after suffering the defeat.

Wentworth lead nearly wire-to-wire throughout in the entre match and got things started by jumping out to a 9-0 lead to open the first set. All nine point were served while freshman Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) was on the line. Suffolk began to come back and cut the lead to four on two occasions, including at 17-13, but would get no closer at the Leopards took a 25-17 win. Quick had five kills on eight swings without making an error. Rogoz added five kills and junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) had three kills on four swings and four digs.

The Leopards, who hit a match-high .355 in the opening frame, carried momentum into the second set and took a 25-18 win to go ahead 2-0. Wentworth jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the set but allowed the Rams to creep back in at 12-7. However, that would be as close as Suffolk would get as a 6-3 run extended the lead to 18-10 and the Black & Gold would prevail. Rogoz had four kills on 10 swings without and error and had four digs while Carlson had a pair of kills and served to aces.

The Sweep was completed with a 25-16 win in the third set as the Leopards forced Suffolk to hit -.037. After the set was tied at 3-all, Wentworth rolled off 13 of the next 16 points to take a 16-6 lead. The Rams closed the gap to 22-15 but would get no closer. Quick, Rogoz, and junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) had three kills apiece in the set.

In addition to her 12 kills, Rogoz had nine digs while Quick added five digs and a block to go along with her nine kills. Shea and Carlson finished with five kills apiece with Carlson serving two aces and recording 10 assists, two aces, six digs, and a block. Freshman Clouse had 13 assists and a pair of aces, and sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had 12 digs.

Wentworth hosts Daniel Webster Thursday night.
