Women's Volleyball Falls at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) recorded a dozen kills and 10 digs to help pace the Roger Williams University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match on Wednesday evening.

With the win the Hawks improve to 11-5 overall and stay unbeaten in CCC play at 4-0. The Leopards see their record drop to 13-3 overall and 2-2 on the season.

Roger Williams took an early lead in the opening set, scoring five of the first six points and jumping out to an 11-4 lead after a service ace from junior Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.). The Leopards pulled within four at 19-15 on a block from junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) and freshman Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.). Roger Williams scored four of the next five points to take a 23-16 lead before a 5-1 run – capped off by a freshman Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) kill – made it 24-21. However, the Hawks would take the set 25-21. Boyer had four kills in the set for Roger Williams while Quick had five for Wentworth.

The Hawks took a 25-16 win in the second set, breaking a 5-5 tie with a 9-0 run and never looking back. Wentworth pulled within six at 20-14, however four straight Roger Williams points put the set out of reach. Boyer and senior Sarah McNiff (Redding, Conn.) had three kills apiece for the Hawks. Quick added five more kills for the Leopards and classmate Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) added three of her own.

Both teams traded points in a competitive third set which saw 12 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 12-11, Roger Williams rolled off three straight points to take the lead for good at 14-12. The Hawks led by as many as four late in the set before a late push brought Wentworth to 24-21. However, a freshman Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.) kill closed out the match. Boyer and Neuberger had five kills apiece in the set for the Hawks while Quick (five kills) and Rogoz (four kills) paced the Black & Gold.

Quick led the Leopards with 15 kills to go along with seven digs and an attack percentage of .353. Rogoz finished with eight kills and 15 digs, junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) had six kills, and Carlson and freshman Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) had 17 and 12 assists, respectively. Carlson and sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) had 14 kills apiece.

Wentworth hosts UMass Dartmouth Thursday evening.
