BROOKLINE, Mass. – Freshman Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) had 18 kills and junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) added 17 to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team run its win streak to seven as the Leopards swept Mitchell and Newbury in a tri-match hosted by Newbury at Hellenic College.
The Leopards reached another milestone in an already historic season as the Black & Gold reached the 20-win mark, sitting at 20-3 on the season.
WENTWORTH 3, MITCHELL 0
A Mitchell service error in the opening set tied the score for the third and final tie of the frame, 5-all, as Wentworth – thanks in part to the serving of freshman Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) – went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good at 11-5. The Leopards used a 7-0 run with junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) on the line to increase the lead to 19-7 before taking the set 25-12. Shea had four kills in the set and Rogoz added three.
The Leopards led wire-to-wire in the second set, downing the Mariners by a 25-7 score. Leading 6-4, an 8-0 run broke the set open as sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) served seven straight points, including four aces. Mitchell would score three of the next five points, however sophomore Abigail Ahern (Barrington, N.H.) served the next seven points, including a pair of aces, to close out the set.
Wentworth broke open the third set by using a 9-0 run to turn an 11-7 score into a 13-point advantage (20-7) with Carlson serving for eight points. Rogoz, Shea, and senior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had three kills apiece in the set as the Leopards hit .591 in the frame.
Shea had 10 kills while Rogoz added eight and hit .467. Nihan, Ahern, and Carlson had four kills each and Carlson also had 20 assists and four aces. Clark had eight digs and five aces in the win.
WENTWORTH 3, NEWBURY 0
A back-and-forth opening set saw 10 ties and 11 lead changes with the two teams nearly trading points for most of the set. A service error broke the 10th tie and gave Wentworth a 16-15 lead and sent Quick to the service line where two of the four points she served resulted in aces. Carlson would serve the final three points of the set, which resulted in a pair of Shea kills sandwiched around a service error. Quick had four kills on five swings without an error in the set while Shea added three kills.
Wentworth took the lead for good in the second set on a kill by Quick, which made the score 11-10 and started a 6-1 run. Newbury would pull within two at 19-17 after an attack error, however a 6-1 spurt by the Leopards closed out the set. Quick had five kills in the set and Rogoz added three. Freshman Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) had a pair of blocks.
The Black & Gold hit a match-high .419 in the third set, scoring eight of the first 10 points and never looking back in a 25-16 win. Rogoz had five kills on six swings without an error and Shea added four kills.
Quick finished the match with 12 kills, three aces, seven digs, and hit .417. Rogoz added 10 kills and 15 digs, Shea had seven kills, and Carlson had six kills, three aces, and 17 assists. Lassiter added three blocks, freshman Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) had 16 assists, and Clark had 15 digs and two aces.
