Women's Volleyball Sweeps Anna Maria to Match Program's Best Start

PAXTON, Mass. – Sophomores Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) and Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) each recorded double-doubles and senior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) hit .636 as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team equaled its best start in program history with a 3-0 win at Anna Maria.

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-0 for the second straight season with the Amcats fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Leopards raced out to a 5-1 start in the opening frame before Anna Maria scored six of the next eight points and tied the set at 7-all after an attack error. A pair of kills from Rogoz helped ignite a 7-2 run and gave the Black & Gold a 15-9 lead. Wentworth led by as many as eight on a kill from Carlson before the Amcats would get within six at 20-14. However, back-to-back attack errors halted the hosts' attempt to get closer and the Leopards claimed the opener, 25-16.

Wentworth found itself trailing 4-1 to start the second set before a 7-1 run gave the visitors an 8-6 lead. During the run Rogoz tallied three kills. After a Leopard attack error pulled the hosts to 8-7, the Black & Gold rolled off nine straight points to break the set open and took a 17-8 lead when junior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) served an ace. Rogoz would finish the set with an ace of her own to close the set, 25-15.

After Anna Maria tied the third set at 2-all, Wentworth scored six straight points to take an 8-2 lead as sophomore Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) was on the line for five of those points and Carlson had a pair of kills. The Leopards upped their lead to 14-5 on a senior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) kill, however the Amcats went on a 10-3 run and cut the lead to 17-15. Out of a time out Wentworth scored four of the next six points to take a 21-17 lead, and, after the hosts cut the lead to two on a pair of occasions, senior Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) ended the match with a kill.

Rogoz finished with 12 kills on 30 swings with just one error (.367) to go along with 15 digs. Quick went 12-2-23 (.435) with 10 digs while Carlson did not commit an error on 11 swings, notching seven kills for the .636 attack percentage. Shea and Lassiter each had five kills, Clark had three aces and 14 digs, Sophomore Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) had 22 assists and seven digs while freshman Kayla Chen (Irvine, Calf.) had 18 helpers to go along with five digs.

The Leopards host WPI and Mount Ida on Saturday.
