Women's Volleyball Stopped by Babson

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) and junior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) each recorded a dozen kills to help the Babson College women's volleyball team pick up its eighth straight victory, a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

With the win the Beavers improve to 12-2 on the season while the Leopards suffer just their second defeat of the season, dropping to 13-2.

In the opening set Wentworth jumped out to a 7-2 lead with sophomore Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) serving a pair of aces. Babson closed the gap to 10-7 on a solo block from Roseen and eventually tied the score at 14-all on a kill from Puccio. Using a 4-2 spurt, Babson took an 18-16 lead. Wentworth scored the next two points to tie the set at 18-all and a senior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) kill tied the set again at 19-all. Babson rolled off four straight points to take a 23-19 lead 25-21 win in the first set. Puccio hit .556 (6-1-9) in the set while Roseen hit .571 (4-0-7). Sophomore Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Il.) had three kills for the Leopards.

Babson took a 6-2 lead to start the second set, thanks in part to a pair of kills from Roseen. Wentworth closed the gap to 8-7 after junior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) served an ace. Three straight Beaver points lead to a Leopard timeout at 11-7 and, out of the timeout, Babson scored two straight points to up its lead to 13-7. After Wentworth scored two consecutive points, Babson used a 7-2 run and took a 20-11 lead on a kill sophomore Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.). Trailing 22-12, the Leopards scored four of the next five points and cut the deficit to 23-16 after an attack error, however, Babson took a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 win. Roseen had six kills and did not make an error on 12 swings (.500) for the Beavers while Rogoz had five kills for Wentworth.

Back-to-back aces from sophomore Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) started off the third set and Wentworth's lead went to 3-0 after a kill from Rogoz. Babson countered with three straight points to knot the set at 3-all. The score would be tied seven more times before the Leopards took a 15-13 lead on a kill from senior Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.). The Beavers scored three consecutive points to take a 16-15 lead on a kill from Puccio. Babson extended its lead to 20-16 after a kill from freshman Gizem Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey) and closed out the match with a 25-20 win. Puccio had five kills in the frame while sophomore Kristin Carsotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) had four on five swings without an error.

Carosotto chipped in with nine kills on 15 swings with just one error (.533). Yilmaz added seven kills and a block/ Cameron had 41 assists while junior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) had 14 digs.

Rogoz led the leopards with 10 kills to go along with seven digs. Tomastik served a pair of aces while recording 10 assists, Quick had nine digs, and sophomore Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) had 10 assists.

Wentworth is at Regis on Saturday for a tri-match against the Pride and Lesley. Babson hosts UMass Boston and Coast Guard in a tri-match on Saturday.
