BOSTON, Mass. – Behind .379% hitting as a team, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept the Rams of Suffolk University, 3-0, on Tuesday evening inside Regan Gymnasium.
Wentworth, which earned its eighth straight victory, defeated Suffolk by set scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-10, and improves to 14-2 this season.
The Leopards' .379% hitting ranks second all-time in Wentworth women's volleyball single-match history, coming second to .520% hitting, a mark the Black & Gold established in last weekend's sweep over Anna Maria.
Despite Wentworth trailing 2-5 in the opening set, two Rams' miscues and a kill from freshman Mary Zlotosch (Durham, N.H.) quickly tied things up 5-5. Both teams battled point-for-point until a 10-1 run in favor of Wentworth put the Leopards in front 19-12. A handful of errors form Suffolk, two kills form Zlotosch and a kill from junior Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) saw Wentworth score the final six of ten points for the 25-18 score.
Wentworth hit .400 in the middle set, and took an early 10-8 lead off a kill from freshman Abigail Mains (Goldendale, Wash.). The Leopards never looked back throughout the frame, as Mains and freshman Jade Iadarola (Miami, Fla.) scored the final three of four points with Zlotosch on the serve in the 25-14 victory.
The Leopards took a commanding 13-1 lead in the final set of the evening, as senior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) served ten straight points, including one service ace, two kills apiece from Iadarola and Zlotosch, and a triple-block from Iadarola, Zlotosch, and sophomore Makenna Salsbury (Bel Air, Md.). Wentworth went on a 7-1 run before Suffolk was able to reach double-digits, 24-10, as a final kill from Iadarola sealed the sweep for the visitors.
Zlotosch led a strong offensive effort with 12 kills and .435% hitting, while also dishing out nine assists. Junior Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) did not commit a single error on 12 swings with nine kills for an impressive .750 percentage, while Rogoz followed with six kills and zero errors for .400% hitting.
Defensively, 10 of 11 players on the court recorded at least one dig, with junior Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) leading the way with 16 in the win. Junior Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.), after a 31-dig performance in last week's 3-0 conference win over Roger Williams, totaled eight kills behind Cambray. Junior Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) was Wentworth's primary setter, and registered 26 assists.
Wentworth has a quick turnaround and returns to action tomorrow evening with a conference match at Curry College. First serve between the Leopards and the Colonels is slated for 7:00 p.m.
