MILTON, Mass. – Senior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) become the second player in Wentworth women's volleyball history to reach 1,000 career digs in the Leopards' 3-0 win over Curry College on Wednesday evening.
The Leopards improve to 15-2 overall, keeping pace with last season's best start in program history, and remain undefeated in conference play at 4-0.
Despite the hosts taking a 4-0 lead to open the match, junior Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) served six straight points, with three kills from freshman Mary Zlotosch (Durham, N.H.) one from junior Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.), and a block from Zlotosch and Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) to take a 6-4 lead. Wentworth stayed out in front for the sets' remainder, and locked it in to close the set on a 5-1 lead, 25-18.
Roles reversed in the middle frame, as Curry erased Wentworth's early 8-5 lead with a 4-1 run, tying the set 9-9. Both teams battled point-for-point until a Curry service error tied the set 16-16 for one last time, leading Wentworth to a 5-1 spurt – including two kills from Rogoz and one from Quick – for a 21-19 lead. The Colonels burned a timeout but were unsuccessful at a comeback, as Wentworth scored the final four of seven points for the 25-22 final.
Wentworth fought hard for the sweep victory in the third set, as the visitors found themselves down by two, 21-23. After a Leopards' timeout, a Colonel attack error and a kill from Zlotosch pulled Wentworth within one, 23-24, forcing Curry to use its final timeout of the evening. With Clark on the serve, Rogoz and Zlotosch put the Leopards back out in front, but Curry forced the set into extra points with a swing from Lexi Pereira. Rogoz then set the Leopards up for match point before freshman Abigail Mains (Goldendale, Wash.) subbed in and sealed the 27-15 win with a kill from Zlotosch's assist.
Rogoz led all players with 18 kills on .204% hitting, and additionally recorded 17 digs for her tenth double-double of the season. Quick followed with 11 kills, .207% hitting, and 17 digs for her fifth double-double, while classmate Lexi Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) led the defense with 20 digs in the win. Junior Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) and Zlotosch combined for 40 assists, and dished out 25 and 15, respectively.
Wentworth returns to action on Friday for its third game of the week with a 6:00 p.m. match at Emerson.
