BOSTON, Mass. – Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball junior Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) registered her 1,000th career point in a 3-0 non-conference victory over Emerson College on Friday evening inside Brown & Plofker Gymnasium.
The milestone comes as the Leopards' second in as many games – as senior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) recently hit 1,000 career digs in Wednesday night's conference victory over Curry. Rogoz now sits third all-time in points in the women's volleyball record books with 1,017.5.
The Leopards keep pace with their historic season and hit .383 as a team, while running their win streak to 10 straight games. The Black & Gold improve to 17-2 this season, while Emerson drops to 9-10.
Rogoz needed just two points heading into the non-conference match to reach 1,000, and hit the mark with ease to tie the first set at 11-11. Despite a 4-0 run from the hosts, Wentworth used a kill and an ace from junior Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and a kill from Mary Zlotosch (Durham, N.H.) to pull within two points, 17-19. Emerson junior Fara Cohen got one back for the Lions, but Wentworth put six straight points on the board to regain the lead, 23-20. The Leopards' final five points in the set all came from Rogoz, who had eight kills in the frame.
Wentworth led from start to finish in the middle set, and doubled up on the Lions early, 6-3. The Lions would pull as close as one point away, 10-9, but Wentworth responded with a 5-1 run – including two kills from Rogoz and one from Quick – to pull away at 15-10. The Leopards scored the final 10 of 15 points to take the second set 25-15, highlighted by two back-to-back kills from Zlotosch.
In its best set of the evening, Wentworth hit .519% with 17 kills and just three errors on 27 swings, gaining an early 5-1 advantage with a kill apiece from Quick and classmate Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) and two from Zlotosch. An attack error from Cohen gave the Leopards a double-digit lead, 16-6, while Wentworth kept out in front until sophomore Makenna Salsbury (Bel Air, Md.) sent the Leopards back across town with a 25-14 win.
With her eleventh double-double of the season, Rogoz led all players with 16 kills (.464%) and 14 digs, with two service aces and three assisted blocks for 19.5 total points. Zlotosch added 10 kills with just one error on 18 attempts for .500% hitting, while freshman Jade Iadarola (Miami, Fla.) followed Rogoz with 12 digs in the win. Junior Katie Clouse recorded 20 assists, while classmate Maddy Tomastik dished out 14.
The Leopards close out a four-game road swing on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. match at Rhode Island College.
