Endicott Snaps Leopards' Win Streak on Senior Night

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team saw its historic win streak come to a close, falling to regionally-ranked Endicott College, 3-0, on Tuesday evening inside Tansey Gymnasium.

Wentworth finishes regular season conference play at 7-1, its most successful league record in program history, and suffers its first setback since September 14th. Endicott, ranked eleventh in the DIII Regional Rankings for New England, improves to 17-10 this season and 6-1 overall with one remaining conference match on Saturday against Curry

In the highly anticipated match, both teams battled point-for-point throughout all three sets, as a kill from junior Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) deadlocked the first set 16-16 for the eleventh time. A 5-0 run from Endicott did the Leopards in, as kills from Quick and classmate Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) could not overcome the setback to give Endicott the 25-19 victory.

The middle set was even closer than the first, as a kill and an ace from Zoey Gifford broke a 16-16 tie for the Gulls. Wentworth used kills from freshman Mary Zlotosch (Durham, N.H.) and a solo block from Rogoz to pull within one, 20-19, but the Gulls held on and never surrendered the lead. Rogoz gave a big swing to tie the set 22-22, before Endicott burned a timeout and used a 3-0 run to close out 25-22.

The Gulls rode momentum into the final frame and jumped to an early 5-3 lead. Endicott, however, fell into an offensive slump and gave Wentworth a 6-5 lead following three attack errors. After several ties and lead changes, a 5-1 run from Endicott and a block from Colleen McAvoy and Amanda Gilbert gave the Gulls a four-point cushion, 15-11. The Leopards were down but not out, as Quick put the pedal to the floor and swung for three straight kills, before a kill from Rogoz tied the set 16-16. Wentworth tied things up four times more and refused to go quietly, but ultimately fell to another 3-0 closer from the Gulls and a final kill from Gilbert.

Rogoz and Quick gave the Leopards tremendous contributions both offensively and defensively, each recording a double-double. Rogoz registered 15 kills (.244) with 11 digs, while Quick swung into 12 kills (.227) and 14 digs defensively. Junior Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.), named CCC Libero of the Week on Monday, had 17 digs in her eighteenth double-digit dig performance of the season.

Wentworth concludes the regular season with a non-conference tri-match on Friday evening against Worcester State and Fitchburg.
