Boston, Mass. – The Wentworth women's volleyball is headed to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals after a 3-0 sweep over Gordon College on Tuesday evening inside Tansey Gymnasium.

STAT LEADERS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wentworth, who took Gordon to five sets just three days ago, sent the Fighting Scots home packing by set scores of 25-15, 25-23, and 25-16.
  • The Leopards forced Gordon into an early timeout in the first set, taking a 10-5 lead after back-to-back errors from the Fighting Scots. The visitors turned a 6-3 run and pulled within three points and kept the gap at three following a kill from Amanda Snyder with the score at 16-13 in favor of WIT. Gordon burned its final timeout after a Waggoner blast that followed a Gordon attack error, as Wentworth rebuilt a substantial lead of 19-13. Two kills from Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) a service ace from Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) and a handful of attack errors from Gordon – who hit just -.044 in the set – sealed the ten-point victory for the Leopards.
  • Wentworth was efficient on the swing in the middle set, hitting .367 as a team. The Black & Gold showed resilience in the beginning of the frame, as Gordon commanded the lead from the start. Two points from Snyder and an ace from Jacque Fitzgerald gave Gordon a 9-6 lead before the Leopards crawled back with four unanswered points, including a big block from Rogoz and Waggoner and a Claire Quick ace.  Each team answered the other's substantial offensive run, until Rogoz gave the Leopards match point opportunity that Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) put away with ease.
  • Solid service from Ashley Lavigne (Waterford, N.Y.) put the Leopards in good standing in the final set, as the Leopards ran to an 8-4 lead forcing a Gordon timeout. Wentworth stayed out in front, gaining a five-point lead after a kill from Rogoz, mixed in with four more points from Gordon for the 15-14 lead. Wentworth then ran away with the set with no chance of a Gordon comeback, as a 7-0 run thanks for Claire Quick, Mary Zlotosch, and Waggoner put WIT out in front 22-14. Quick smashed back-to-back kills with help from Waggoner to seal Wentworth's spot in the Semifinal match.
