Offense Erupts in Baseball's Sweep of Anna Maria

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team erupted for 33 runs as the Leopards ran their win streak to three games with a sweep of Anna Maria. Wentworth took the first game, 12-7, and completed the sweep with a 21-1 win in game two.

GAME ONE:  Wentworth 12, Anna Maria 7
Anna Maria took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning as the AMCATS led off with three straight singles to load the bases. Sophomore Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) had an RBI single, freshman Nick Feola (North Providence, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice to score junior Jonathan Roy (Worcester, Mass.), and junior Joseph Fahey (Auburn, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly.

Wentworth responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Bryon Kucharski (East Haven, Conn.) tripled in senior Johnny Ryan (Brandt Rock, Mass.), sophomore Tim Elrick (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, junior Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) hit into a fielder's choice, and junior Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.) scored on the back end of a stolen base by Burst. Junior Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.) delivered a two-run double to round out the scoring.

Burst hit a one-out single, stole second, and went to third on a balk. He came into score when Temte reached on an error. The Leopards tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth as freshman Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, senior Sam McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) and Ryan had RBI singles and two runs came in by way of wild pitches.

The AMCATS scored four times in the top of the seventh keyed by a Fahey RBI single. As well as scoring on a wild pitch, a fielder's choice, and a groundout.

Senior Corey Jerolmon (New Milford, Conn.) improved to 1-1 on the year allowing three runs on four hits and striking out three in six innings. Ryan had two hits, Burst scored three times, and Temte drove in two.

Six different players recorded hits for Anna Maria while sophomore Trevor Brown (Gardner, Mass.) took the loss, allowing six runs on two hits in 1.2 innings.

GAME TWO:  Wentworth 21, Anna Maria 1
The Leopards tallied a run in the top of the first as Golebiewski hit a one-out double, sophomore Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) walked, and Burst walked to load the bases. McManus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the run.

Wentworth upped its lead to 6-0 in the second inning as Golebiewski had a bases-loaded single which was followed by a Weninger grand slam. An inning later the Leopards tacked on two more runs as Ryan had an RBI single and freshman Matt Smith (Horseheads, N.Y.) drove in a run with a groundout.

The Leopards sent 16 batters to the plate in an 11-run fourth inning. Temte had a pair of RBI singles, Burst had an RBI double, Ryan, Ferri, Matt Smith, and freshman Jake Smith (Orange, Conn,) had RBI singles. Wentworth also scored three times on wild pitches and one time on an error.

An RBI groundout by Fahey gave Anna Maria its lone run of the game in the bottom of sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Wentworth scored twice as freshman Steve Hall (Derry, N.H.) had an RBI single and classmate Dan Cole (Kingston, Mass.) drove in a run with an RBI single.

Freshman Dan Howard (Westwood, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate win pitching four innings of four-hit baseball. Freshman Leo Coehlo (Marlborough, Mass.) and senior Ryan Daniels (Bristol, R.I.) pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Weninger was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Golebiewski and Temte had three hits apiece, while Ryan, Cole, and Jake Smith had two hits.

Sophomore Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) took the loss (0-2), allowing 15 runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings. Sophomore Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.) had two hits for Anna Maria.

Wentworth plays Penn State-Altoona on Friday.
