The longest tenured and winningest head coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology, Steve Studley enters his 19th season in the Leopard dugout.

Studley looks to lead the team back to the postseason in 2023. In 2022, the Leopards posted their highest win total in five years, starting off the season with a 10-3 record and had one student-athlete named to the All-Commonwealth Coast Confernece Team.

With a strong recruiting class in place, the 2007 season was a springboard to the most successful season in program history in 2008 when the Leopards won a program-record 30 games (30-14) and advanced, for the first time since 1996, to the CCC championship game before falling to Western New England. As the number four seed that season the Leopards knocked off top-seeded Roger Williams twice in the tournament. Wentworth also earned its first ECAC Tournament berth since 1995 as a result of its efforts.

Wentworth would earn both CCC and ECAC Tournament berths in each of the next three seasons and advanced to the ECAC finals in 2010, finishing 29-15. The 29 wins are the second-highest in program history behind the 2008 squad’s 30. The Leopards’ 105-63-1 record (.624) record from 2007-2011 was one of the tops in New England (all divisions) and the Black & Gold boasted the CCC’s Pitcher of the Year in Chris Sandini in 2009.

After missing in the postseason in 2012, Wentworth was the number five seed in the CCC Tournament in 2013 and pulled off a 5-1 upset of second-seeded and eventual New England regional finalist Endicott in the first round and finished the season with a 16-17 record. As the number six seed in 2014, the Leopards nearly duplicated its upset effort against top-seeded Endicott in the opening round of the CCC Tournament, however the Gulls squeaked out a 7-5 victory.

The 2017 Leopards went 9-3 in its annual spring break trip, tied with their best neutral showing from the 2015 campaign, however lost numerous one-run contests which held them out of the CCC Tournament. In 2016, Studley achieved a personal milestone with his 200th career win, a 4-0 conference victory at Curry on April 9.

Wentworth made an appearance in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament in 2018 as the Leopards posted the most conference wins (eight) since the 2010 campaign. The Black & Gold started its annual spring break trip in Florida by dropping their first four contests, however, rebounded to finish the trip 4-4 with four straight wins. In conference play, Wentworth took three of four games from the two teams which appeared in the CCC finals – Salve Regina and Western New England – and the sweep of the latter and eventual league champion marked the first-ever sweep of the Golden Bears. The 2019 campaign saw the Black & Gold narrowly miss a berth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament. Seven of Wentworth’s losses with a squad consisting of a geographically diverse roster were by a single run. The Leopards picked up an early-season victory over Salve Regina, which would go on to win the CCC Championship.

Over the course of his career he has coached 38 players who have earned All-CCC honors 50 times, including Sandini’s pitcher of the year honor and Matt Moyen, Pete Oggeri, and Tim Elrick, who earned CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in 2006, 2010, and 2018, respectively. Moyen was inducted into the Wentworth Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011 and Sandini and Oggeri – battery mates for four years – were inducted in 2015.

Four of Studley’s former players have served on his staff in Moyen (2006-2015; 2017), Mike Roberts ’09 (2011-2016; 2018), Brendon Duffy ’11 (2013-2014; 2016-2018) and Oggeri (2010-present).

Prior to arriving at Wentworth, Studley spent four seasons as an Assistant Baseball Coach at Stonehill College where he primarily worked with the pitching staff. In his final season with the Skyhawks (2004), the team had the sixth-lowest earned run average in all of Division II (2.97) and during his tenure Stonehill won 108 games.

His coaching experience began in 1994 when he served as an assistant coach at Castelton State, assisting in all aspects of the program with a concentration on outfielders, hitting, and baserunning. From 1995-2001, he was an assistant coach at Duxbury High School and, in his first full season working with the varsity program, he helped turn the program from a last-place team in 2000 to a first-place team in 2001.

A native of Marshfield, Mass., Studley earned a Bachelor’s degree in communications and mass media from Castleton State in 1994. While at Castleton State, he was a four-year letterwinner on the baseball team, guiding the Spartans to four appearances in the NAIA Division III District Tournament. He was a two-year (1992, 1993) captain and earned NAIA All-Conference/All-District honors during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.

Studley is the Assistant Recreation Director for the Town of Duxbury. He resides in Marshfield, Mass., with his wife, Sharon, and son Steven.
