BOSTON, Mass. – For the second season in a row, Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team has earned a spot on the Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Conference team. Azums repeats the spot he earned on the second team as a sophomore after the All-CCC teams and major award winners were announced on Monday afternoon.
Azums is averaging 17.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game during his junior campaign while shooting 62.1 percent from the floor and 83.6 percent from the free throw line. His field goal percentage is currently the fifth-highest in a single season in program history, while he presently ranks second in program history for highest free throw percentage in a season. Additionally, his 10.8 rebound per game average is the second-highest by a Leopard in a season in program history.
Starting 24 of the 25 games in which he has played this season, Azums has amassed 13 double-doubles and has scored 20 or more points in eight contests, including setting a career high of 28 points in a loss at the University of New England on December 4. In the second meeting of the season against the Nor'Easters (February 13), he fell one point shy of matching that career high, finishing with 27 points (including going 11-for-11 from the free throw line), and, in the process, became the 16th player in program history to reach the 1,000 point milestone. His 23 rebounds in a loss at Gordon on January 30 tied the program record for caroms in a game.
Azums has started 47 of the 70 games he has played in over the course of his career and is averaging 14.4 points and a program record 9.5 rebounds per game. He is also the career leader in field goal percentage (.627), ranks fifth in total rebounds (663), sixth in scoring average, and seventh in free throw percentage (.768).
Wentworth (8-17, 5-1 CCC) is seeded seventh in the CCC Tournament and will travel to second-seeded Gordon (21-4, 13-3) for a first-round matchup on Tuesday night.
