EVERETT, Mass. – Junior Chris Sattler (East Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded a hat trick in the third period and five other of his teammates had multiple-point games as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team shutout Post University, 9-0, in a non-conference contest played at Allied Veterans Memorial Rink Friday night.
Sattler's three goals in a span of 12:51 was a part of a five-goal outburst by the Leopards (3-10-1) which included a pair of shorthanded markers 21 seconds apart. In addition to Sattler's three goals sophomore Paul Filippone (Cranston, R.I.) had a goal and three assists, junior Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) had two goals and an assist, freshman Adam Tracey (Sleep Hollow, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist, sophomore Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.) had a goal and an assist, and freshman Garrett Geane (Fullerton, Calif.) had a pair of assists.
The Leopards' nine goals were the most put up by the Black & Gold since scoring nine times in a 9-5 win at Nichols on Dec. 4, 2011.
At the 5:05 mark of the first period Tracey gave the hosts the lone goal they would need, scoring on the power play from sophomore Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.Y.) and Johnston. McDonough notched his second of the game at the 9:19 mark when he tallied an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later sophomore Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.) set up classmate Sam Levin (Simsbury, Conn.) to give Wentworth a 4-0 lead.
McDonough provided the Leopards with the only goal of the second period when he scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 8:03 of the period.
Sattler got things started in the third period when he put home a rebound of a sophomore Tim Shea (Ferrisburgh, Vt.) shot at 3:07. Shea had collected the rebound of a Filippone shot. Just 11 seconds into a shorthanded situation on a major penalty, sophomore Griffin Cady (Falmouth, Maine) sent a pass up the ice to Geane who found Filippone. At 11:09, only 21 seconds after the shorthanded goal, Sattler scored from Filippone and Geane and he completed his hat trick when he scored off rebounds of shots from Filippone and Tracey.
Tracey and McDonough helped round out the scoring when they assisted on Johnston's goal at 16:11 of the stanza.
Freshman Kenny Graham (Milton, Mass.) made 13 saves in 46:22 of work before Cady made a pair of saves in 13:20 of action. Eagle sophomore netminder Devin Day (Fontana, Calif.) made 54 saves for Post (2-13-0) which was outshot 63-15 on the night.
Wentworth returns to the ice for its final non-conference contest of the season on Saturday afternoon against Framingham State.
