EVERETT, Mass. – Four different players scored goals and senior Patrick Salkind (Springfield, Va.) stopped all 38 shots he faced as the Nichols College ice hockey team posted a 4-0 shutout over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest at Allied Veterans Memorial Rink Saturday afternoon.
The Bison picked up their second straight win and ran their unbeaten streak to three games, improving to 11-4-3 overall and 8-1-2 in CCC play while the Leopards had their four-game (2-0-2) unbeaten streak snapped to stand at 4-11-2 (2-7-1).
After a scoreless first period which saw Wentworth hold a 13-6 shot advantage, Nichols wasted little time getting the only goal it would need, scoring just 23 seconds into the contest. Junior Scott Cuthrell (Waterford, Mich.) started a play which lead to a 2-on-1 with sophomore Matthew Menta (Lima, Pa.) and sophomore Ian Spencer (Hawthorne, N.J.). Menta slipped the puck past freshman netminder Kenny Graham (Milton, Mass.). AT 8:11 of the period Cuthrell picked up his second assist of the game as he and freshman Hogan Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) had helpers on junior Chris Deming's (Madison, Ala.) goal.
Nichols tacked on two more goal in the third period to complete the scoring. At 1:32, junior Ryan Hunter (Mississauga, Ont.) scored from sophomore T.J. Roche (Northport, N.Y.) and junior Cody Rodgers. Spencer and Denning had a hand in Davidson's marker at 14:19.
Graham made 25 stops for Wentworth, which outshot the Bison by a 38-29 margin.
Both teams are in action on Thursday as Wentworth is at Curry and Nichols is at Endicott.
