WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) scored two goals and added an assist and classmate Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team defeat Western New England, 6-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Friday night.
With the win the Leopards run their unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2), improving to 2-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in CCC play. The Golden Bears remain winless on the season, falling to 0-6-0 (0-5-0).
The Black & Gold wasted little time jumping on the board as Tracey scored just 79 seconds into the game off assists from junior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) and freshman Tyler Lapshanski (Belvidere, N.J.) give Wentworth a 1-0 lead. Tracey tallied his second of the period at the 11:46 mark. After the Leopards won the ensuing faceoff, Chase made it a 3-0 contest with first of the game, which came 22 seconds later and was assisted by classmate Connor Busch (Lake in the Hills, Ill.).
A pair of second period goals spaced 4:10 apart extended the lead to 5-0. At 10:44, sophomore Brendan Lloyd (Merrick, N.Y.) scored from senior Sam Levin (Simsbury, Conn.) and senior Jonny Spada (Glen Rock, N.J.). Chase scored his second of the game and team-high fifth of the season off assists from Gorodetsky and senior Tim Shea, Jr. (Ferrisburgh, Vt.).
Western New England broke the shutout bid with a goal 24 seconds into the third period as sophomore Anthony Frati (Churchville, N.Y.) scored from senior Eddie Rogers (St. Louis, Mo.). With one second remaining in the contest, the Black & Gold notched their second power-play goal of the night as Gorodetsky scored from Chase and senior Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.).
Freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up the win, making 25 saves in the win. Senior Kevin Gollmer (Flourtown, Pa.) took the loss, making 14 saves in 34:55 of action. Junior Baylee Johns (Woodstock, Conn.) made 19 stops over the final 24:05. Wentworth had a 39-26 shot advantage in the game.
The two teams play again tomorrow afternoon at Allied Veterans Rink at 4:00 p.m.
