BRUNSIWCK, Maine – Five different players scored goals, including junior Ronnie Lestan (Walpole, Mass.) who also had a pair of assists as the Bowdoin College ice hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-2, on the opening day of the Bowdoin/Colby Faceoff Classic.
With the win the Polar Bears improve to 2-2-0 on the season while the Leopards see both their two-game win streak and five-game (3-0-2) unbeaten streak come to an end.
The hosts staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after one period of play. At the 4:26 mark, senior Cody Tedesco (Franklin, Mass.) scored on Bowdoin's first shot on goal of the game from classmate Jason Cahoon (South Hadley, Mass.). Bowdoin took a 2-0 lead when he scored from Lestan and sophomore Collin Van der Veen (Duxbury, Mass.) at 15:10. With 39 seconds left in the frame and the Polar Bears in a shorthanded situation, Lestan centered a pass to junior Christian Capello (Wellesley, Mass.) who beat freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) to complete the first period scoring.
Wentworth cut the lead to 3-1 at the 9:04 mark of the second period as sophomore Dante Flori (Watertown, Mass.) carried the puck through the Bowdoin zone and sent a shot past senior Erik Wurman (Acton, Mass.). Just over three minutes later, Van der Veen and sophomore Jack Bliss (Chelmsford, Mass.) set up junior Pat Geary (Libertyville, Ill.). At the 15:09 mark of the period, junior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) sent classmate Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) a breakout pass. Chase skated past a defender and scored to the left side to make it a two-goal game for the second time in the period.
With 1:43 remaining, Draper was pulled for an extra attacker, However, with 19 seconds left, Van de Veen and freshman Kyle Jadatz (Kings Park, N.Y.) set up Lestan for the empty-net goal.
Wurman made 30 saves for Bowdoin while Draper turned aside 21 shots for Wentworth. The Leopards had a 32-26 shot advantage.
Both teams shift to Colby tomorrow as the Polar Bears face Potsdam at 1:00 and the Leopards face the host Mules at 4:00.
