Fast Start Helps Curry Claim Win Over Hockey

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Zachary White (Milford, Conn.) scored a hat trick and assisted on a goal to help the Curry College ice hockey team skate to a 9-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Colonels improve to 13-6-3 overall and 8-4-2 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 7-11-4 (5-8-1).

Curry jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one period of play, which included scoring three goals in a span of 4:27. Just 1:02 into the contest sophomore Tyler Lindstrom (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored before White tallied the next two just 18 seconds apart, at 5:11 and 5:29, respectively, with the latter coming on the power play. Wentworth jumped on the board with a power-play goal of its own at 13:46 when junior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) netted his team-high 13th marker of the season, which was assisted by freshman Jake McKenelley (Middleton, Mass.) and senior Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.). At 14:03, Colonel freshman Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas) put the hosts back up by three goals when he made it 4-1.

The Leopards scored the first two goals of the second period to pull within one. McKenelley scored his second of the game, which was assisted by sophomore Jake Hallisey (Quincy, Mass.) just 1:44 into the period, while senior Tim Shea, Jr., (Ferrisburgh, Vt.) scored from classmates Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.) and Paul Filippone, III (Cranston, R.I.) at 10:05. Freshman Alexander Bouchard (Winnipeg, Man.) began a three-goal run for Curry when he scored at 14:23. With 46 ticks left in the period, freshman Michael Curran (Arlington, Mass.) scored on the power play to make it 6-3 before Lindstrom's second goal of the game – a power-play goal – 27 seconds later made it 7-3 after two periods.

Curry extended its lead to 8-3 when White completed the hat trick at the 10:48 mark of the third period. However, The Black & Gold would not go away quietly, scoring twice in a 28-second span to make it an 8-5 game. McKenelley scored his second of the contest, on the power play, at 11:47 which was assisted by senior Jonny Spada (Glen Rock, N.J.) and freshman Joey O'Leary (Boston, Mass.). at 12:15, sophomore Brendan Lloyd (Merrick, N.Y.) found the back of the net off passes from Gorodetsky and junior Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.). That would be as close as Wentworth would come, however, a junior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.) goal with 2:26 remaining rounded out the scoring.

Junior Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) picked up the win, making 21 saves. Freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) took the loss, making 17 saves over the final two periods. Classmate Ryan Bonnvie (Falmouth, Maine) made five saves in the first period. Curry had a 31-26 shot advantage and was 3-for-5 on the power play, while Wentworth was 1-for-3.

Wentworth has its final home-and-home series of the season next weekend against Endicott beginning with a home game Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
