Monks Rally Past Men's Lacrosse

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Joseph's (Maine) men's lacrosse team held Wentworth Institute of Technology scoreless over the final 24:53 of the game, erasing a two-goal deficit and claiming a 12-10 win in non-conference action at North East Regional Park.

With the win the Monks improve to 2-2 on the season while the Leopards fall to 2-2.

Wentworth junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) put the leopards on the board off of a feed from freshman Calvin McKenna (Seattle, Wash.) at the 10:25 mark. From there, St. Joseph's scored the next four times and led, 4-1, after one quarter of play.

Sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) stopped the run with a goal of his at the 12:41 mark of the second quarter and started a string of three Wentworth goals in a span of 2:07 to even the score at 4-all. The Monks reclaimed the lead with three straight, including two from sophomore Zack Hamilton (Pepperell, Mass.), and led, 7-4, with 3:15 left in the first half. The Black & Gold rebounded to score four goals in a span of 1:45 as senior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) scored twice and Doner had a pair of assists making the score 8-7 with 20 seconds left. Hamilton found the back of the net with nine ticks remaining before halftime to even the score at 8-all.

Two minutes and twenty-four seconds into the second half, Eldred gave the Black & Gold a 9-8 lead when he scored his third of the game. Doner notched his third of the game from sophomore Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) with 9:53 left in the quarter, giving Wentworth a 10-8 lead.

St. Joseph's used a goal from freshman Tony Bottari (Nashua, N.H.) with 2:20 remaining in the quarter to pull back within one at 10-9 which began a four-goal spurt to rally for the win. The Monks evened the score when freshman Devin Linscott (Nashua, N.H.) scored the first of his two fourth quarter goals with 8:02 left before Hamilton put the Monks ahead 11-10 less than a minute later. With 4:55 left, St. Joseph's went ahead by a pair after Linscott scored. Wentworth had chances to narrow the gap, including putting a pair of shots on goal late, however, could not score.

Hamilton finished with four goals while Linscott had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.) had a goal and an assist in the win. Sophomore Logan Skinner (Irving, Texas) scooped up seven ground balls.

Doner finished with three goals and three assists while Eldred had three goals and an assist. Bartosiewicz scooped up a game-high eight ground balls while sophomore Anthony D'Avolio (Reading, Mass.) caused three turnovers.

Skinner made 14 saves while sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) made seven saves. Wentworth had advantages in shots (45-32) and ground balls (47-46) while being successful on 22-of-27 clear attempts.

The Leopards face Moravian on Friday morning.
