BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored a goal and assisted on five others to pace five players who recorded multiple points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated Emmanuel, 13-5, in non-conference action Thursday night on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Leopards improve to 3-6 on the season while the Saints slip to 1-5.
A defensive battle throughout most of the first quarter finally saw the hosts break the ice with three goals in a span of 2:36 late in the frame. Freshman Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) scored with 2:50 remaining while seniors Jason Buck (Manlius, N.Y.) and Zach Tomaszek (Milford, Conn.) scored with 45 and 14 seconds left, respectively.
Emmanuel got on the board at the 10:54 mark of the second quarter on a goal from senior Matt Katon (East Falmouth, Mass.) before sophomore Andrew DiPalma (West Orange, N.J.), Buck, and sophomore Steven Russman (Troy, N.Y.) scored goals 2:27 apart to extend the lead to 6-1. The Saints scored the final two goals of the half, however, as senior Ben Hartig-Orr (Reading, Vt.) and junior Alex Flanagan (Westford, Mass.) scored 24 seconds apart to make it 6-3.
Prunier and Hartig-Orr traded goals in the third quarter before Prunier's third goal of the game began a 5-1 run which closed out the contest. During the run, junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had a pair of goals while Buck, senior Matt Larsen (Northborough, Mass.), and Coakley added single goals.
In addition to Coakley's six points, Prunier and Buck each recorded hat tricks, Doner had two goals, and Larsen had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Tom Rockwell (Andover, Mass.) was 15-of-20 at the X and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls while senior Kilian Ryan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) caused three turnovers.
Hartig-Orr finished with two goals for Emmanuel with Flanagan scoring a goal and adding an assist and sophomore Charlie Stutzenberger (Plymouth, Mass.) assisting on two goals. Stutzenberger also had five ground balls.
Sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) made 17 saves for Wentworth. while sophomore Aric Graves (Manchester, Conn.) made 11 saves in defeat. The Leopards had advantages in shots (38-32) and ground balls (36-27).
Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Sunday against Western New England.
