BRISTOL, R.I. – Sophomore Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) scored three goals and assisted on two others to help pace the Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Hawks improve to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 5-10 (2-4).
Senior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) put Wentworth on the board with a goal 2:24 into the contest, however, Roger Williams rolled off 11 straight goals and kept the Leopards off the scoreboard for 20:25. During the run Grier, senior Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.), and junior Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) each recorded two goals.
Junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) ended the run with a man-up goal coming 2:59 into the third quarter. After a Hawk goal from sophomore Connor Hillemeir (Farmington, Conn.) made it 12-2, Eldred notched his second of the game with 6:45 remaining. Two Roger Williams goals in the final 5:11 of the quarter gave the hosts a 14-3 advantage.
The Fourth quarter saw the Black & Gold outscore Roger Williams by a 7-1 margin. Eldred, freshman Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.), and freshman Erik Madden (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each scored in a span of 2:02 before Doner added two straight to cut the lead to 14-8. Grier ended Wentworth's 5-0 run with a goal with 3:23 remaining before sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and sophomore Andrew DiPalma (West Orange, N.J.) completed the scoring for Wentworth.
Bova and Marzec each had two goals and an assist for Roger Williams, which saw Hillemeir scoop up eight ground balls and junior Brian Brockwell (Duxbury, Mass.) cause four turnovers. Hillemeir was also 15-of-20 at the X.
Doner and Eldred each finished with three goals and an assist for Wentworth while Coakley had a goal and two assists. Eldred also picked up five ground balls and sophomore Anthony D'Avolio (Reading, Mass.) caused a pair of turnovers.
Senior Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made 11 saves in 56:37 of action before giving way to sophomore Ryan Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass.), who played the final 3:23. Sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) made 10 saves for Wentworth. The Leopards had a 40-36 shot advantage while the Hawks had the edge in ground balls, 43-35.
Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Tuesday night.
