Softball Splits Day One in Florida; Hancock Earns First Collegiate Win

Clermont, Fla. – The Wentworth softball team highlighted day one of The Spring Games trip with a 6-1 victory over Lakeland University on Sunday afternoon. The Leopards fell to a strong Carroll (Wis.) team in the season-opener, 7-1, and move to 1-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Leopards opened the 2020 season on a high note, leading the Pioneers 1-0 through the first two innings. Freshman Kaitlin Pettenger (Flanders, N.J.) worked a walk and crossed home with help from a base hit by sophomore Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and an RBI groundout from freshman Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.).
  • Carroll used a two-out grand slam to center field from Lauren Hashbarger to steal the lead in the top of the fourth, before adding three more for the 7-1 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wentworth built a 2-0 lead off the bat as junior Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) drove in two Leopards on a deep single to right field. Freshman Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) was rock solid in the circle, and carried Wentworth through two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, including three in a row in the bottom of the second.
  • The Leopards added a single run in the third and fourth innings, respectively, each with two outs down. Sophomore Sabrina Haarstick (Milford, Mass.) drove in the third run of the game, before Pettenger belted her first collegiate triple, scoring Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) on the play.
  • Hancock continued her dominance on the hill for the entirety of the game, and earned her first collegiate win with six K's, one earned run, and six hits in a full game tossed.

  • This was the first meeting between the two schools.

  • Wentworth will play again two tomorrow vs. St. Scholastica and Marywood at 10:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.
