Matt Phippard is entering his sixth season as Wentworth’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach and his ninth season involved with the program as he was an assistant for four years prior to assuming the head coaching position at the start of the 2013-14 season.

The 2017-18 season saw the Leopards post two victories, including an intense 72-21 victory over conference foe Nichols College to snap a 10-game losing streak. Wentworth started the season off with a 62-54 win over Wheelock College in the Mount Ida Tip-Off Tournament. 

The Leopards came off a 3-22 season in 2016-17, as they snapped a 13-game losing streak in the latter half of the year with a 54-49 win over Gordon on senior day. Wentworth picked up its other two victories against non-conference opponents, St. Joseph (Conn.) and Pine Manor College

The 2014-15 season saw the Leopards start the season with a 3-4 record before suffering a seven-game losing streak, which included a pair of losses at the D3Hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. The Leopards were unable to put back-to-back victories together until the final two regular-season contests. With a 44-41 win over Endicott, Wentworth would clinch a trip to the playoffs, which a 45-41 triumph over Nichols would keep the Bison out of the postseason. The Leopards earned their third straight quarterfinal trip to the University of New England.

During the 2013-14 season, the Leopards finished 8-17, which included numerous close games; three of which went into overtime. A two-game winning streak late in the second semester – including a win at Salve Regina – kept playoff hopes alive, however Wentworth needs a win in its final game of the season; 54-35 over Nichols to clinch the number eight seed and travel to top-seeded University of New England in the quarterfinals

Phippard, who is also in his fifth season as Wentworth’s Head Men’s Golf Coach, spent five seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Bridgewater State before arriving at Wentworth. At Bridgewater State he helped the Bears to an 83-50 record, a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Championship in 2009, and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including advancing to the “Sweet Sixteen”during the 2008-09 season. That season Bridgewater State set a program record for wins, finishing 22-7.

A native of Duxbury, Mass., and 1997 graduate of Arizona State University, Phippard began his coaching career as the junior varsity boys’ basketball coach at Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, Ariz., where he spent two seasons. After two seasons as the freshman boys’ basketball coach at Duxbury High School, he spent two seasons as the head boys’ basketball coach for Sun Valley High School in Mesa, Ariz., before returning to New England to spend two years as an assistant boys’ varsity basketball coach at Hingham High School.
