BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Mykaela Scarpace (Marlborough, Conn.) scored a pair of second-half goals 47 seconds apart to erase a 1-0 deficit, however WPI junior Sophie Gomarlo (Swazney, N.H.) netted the game-tying goal at 60:57 as Wentworth Institute of Technology and WPI played to a 2-all tie in non-conference action on Sweeney Field Wednesday night.
The Leopards stand at 4-2-2 on the season while the Engineers are 6-1-1.
Wentworth had a pair of chances early in the contest, however both were saved by sophomore Gabi Hoops (Stonington, Conn.). Just over 10 minutes later, WPI put back-t0-back shots on net, both of which were saved by sophomore Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.).
In the 41st minute, senior Kristen Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass.) headed a corner kick towards the net, however Hoops came up with the save. The Engineers had an 8-6 shot advantage in the first half.
WPI broke the ice at the 48:31 mark. Off a clearing pass attempt, senior Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.) intercepted the pass and fired a shot from 20 yards out which beat Robinson to the upper right corner.
Scarpace took advantage of an Engineer miscue at the 57:06 mark when she gained possession of an errant pass and beat Hoops to the right. Just 47 seconds later, junior Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) took a corner kick from the left side and found and open Scarpace who gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.
The Engineers netted the game-tying goal with 29:03 remaining when freshman Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) came up the left side and fed a pass to Gomarlo, whose shot beat Robinson.
In the 76th minute, WPI nearly went ahead, however a shot from right in front by junior Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, Mass.) went over the net. With 43 seconds left, McCrea put a shot on net, which Robinson saved. The rebound was pushed out which resulted in a corner kick, however the visitors were unable to generate a chance.
WPI took a shot off of a corner kick in the 97th minute, which was headed out by a Wentworth backline defender. The Leopards had a chance in the 99th minute on a bid by Richard, however Hoops came up with the save.
Both teams had chances in the second overtime, however neither was able to end the game.
Robinson made eight saves for Wentworth while Hoops made nine saves for WPI. The Engineers had a 25-19 shot advantage and Wentworth had a 6-4 edge on corner kicks.
Wentworth hosts Salve Regina on Saturday. That same day WPI hosts Wheaton.
