BOSTON, Mass. – Three different players tallied second-half goals and sophomore Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) made a pair of saves to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team snap a four-game winless streak with a 3-0 win over Salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Leopards improve to 5-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in CCC play while the Seahawks fall to 4-4-1 (1-2-0).
Wentworth controlled play in the first half and had three chances in a span of six and a half minutes. Senior Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) had a pair of attempts early while classmate Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) just missed in the 11th minute and senior Michelle Murphy's bid just 40 second later would ricochet off the crossbar. The Leopards had an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half of play.
At the 59:04 mark the hosts got the only goal they would need. Annon served a corner kick from the right and Murphy took a shot from 15 yards out which hit the crossbar. Weinberger quickly corralled the rebound and fed senior Morgan Miller (Schenectady, N.Y.), who put a shot past junior Morgan McBrier (North Kingstown, R.I.).
Just over five minutes later, Annon added some insurance for the Black & Gold as she took a feed from sophomore Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) and put a shot on net which was initially saved by McBrier, however slipped out of her hands and over the line.
With 18:16 remaining, freshman Sidney Brogan (Los Angeles, Calif.) rounded out the scoring when she received a long pass down the middle from junior Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.) and sent a shot to the left side.
Robinson earned her fifth shutout of the season in the win. McBrier made three saves in the second half after coming in for sophomore Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) who had one stop in 45 minutes of work. Wentworth had an 18-6 shot advantage and 5-2 edge on corner kicks.
The Leopards have a quick turnaround as they head to Western Connecticut on Monday night.
