BOSTON, Mass. – Four different players tallied goals and junior Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) added a pair of assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team ran its win streak to four games and its unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1) with a 4-1 win over the University of Massachusetts Boston in a non-conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
With the win the Leopards improve to 8-2-2 while the Beacons see their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end and stand at 2-8-2.
Wentworth applied pressure from the opening kick and was able to put three shots on net in a three-minute span, all of which were saved by sophomore Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.). At the 17:57 mark, the Leopards jumped on the board when Richard fed a pass to senior Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) who buried a shot to the upper right corner.
UMass Boston nearly scored on the ensuing kickoff as junior Jessi Beverlin (Eagle River, Alaska) booted the kickoff on target. Sophomore Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) made the stop, which went out of bounds, however the Beacons were unable to generate a chance off the corner kick which followed.
In the 37th minute Beacon junior Kerri Alexander (Carver, Mass.) fired a shot from the right side which glanced off the post and came back out. Nearly seven minutes later UMass Boston tied the game on a sophomore Julia Masionis (Milford, Mass.) goal. Beverlin sent a pass form the right side to the center of the box where Masionis got a foot on the ball and sent it through a defender and past Fleming.
Senior Mary Pastorelli (Whitesboro, Mass.) gave Wentworth a 2-1 lead at the 54:57 mark. After a foul was called on the Beacons, she lined up a free kick from just beyond midfield, which took a bounce in front and went past Fugiel.
Richard notched her second helper of the contest when she set up sophomore Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) at 74:53. Richard sent a ball across the ball from the low right side to the far left where Reno got a foot on it and scored into an open net. With 5:09 remaining in the contest, freshman Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.) recorded her first career marker as junior Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.) slid her a pass and she deposited the shot inside the left post.
Fleming made five saves in the win. Fugiel made a dozen stops in nearly 75 minutes of action. Freshman Jessie Tenaglia (Braintree, Mass.) made three saves in just over 15 minutes of work. Wentworth had a 32-10 shot advantage and an 8-3 corner kick advantage.
