Women's Volleyball Splits Final Matches of Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Wentworth women's volleyball team is headed back to Boston with a 2-2 overall record, after facing fierce West Coast competition in the 2019 Pacific Coast Classic. The Leopards concluded the tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Redlands, before falling in five sets to Pomona-Pitzer.

Game One: Wentworth 3, Redlands 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-17)

STAT LEADERS – Wentworth

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Leopards grinded out the straight set victory, starting in the first set after being down 6-2 early on. Several lead changes and set ties kept both teams on competitive edge, as Redlands evened out the score 18-18 following a service ace. A Redlands miscue and a service ace from Ashley Lavigne (Waterford, N.Y.) gave Wentworth a two-point cushion, which stood until consecutive kills from Zlotosch and Quick secured the four-point lead.
  • Redlands got off to a hot start in the middle set, and led by as much as five points, 14-9. Wentworth switch gears and turned a 5-1 run, shrinking the gap to a single point 15-14. The Leopards called for a timeout after Redlands answered with a 3-0 run of its own, and kept in front until the dwindling moments of the set. Down 23-20, Wentworth persevered and scored five straight points on two kills from Quick and an ace from Kakuk, finishing the job 25-23 despite a late timeout from the Bulldogs.
  • Executing power and confidence after the first two sets, Wentworth tied the last set 2-2 with Rogoz on the serve, and kept out front for the set's remainder. The Leopards forced the Bulldogs into 10 attack errors, who hit -.093 overall in the set.

STAT LEADERS – Wentworth

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wentworth hit .294 and .371 in the first two sets, respectively to gain a 2-0 match lead. In the succeeding two sets, the offense struggled from the floor while Pomona-Pitzer erased the deficit with two set wins of their own to force a fifth.
  • The Sagehens took the first lead of the extra set, 2-1, and fought off a relentless retaliation from Wentworth, which included two set ties late in the frame. Zlotosch and Devin Neal (Lebanon, Ohio) jumped up for a block for the 10-10 score, while a Sagehens' attack error deadlocked the set at 11-all. Izzy Deatherage came in clutch for Pomona-Pitzer, smashing back-to-back kills and forcing Wentworth into a timeout.
