Changes in Athletics Program

Changes in Athletics Program

To provide programs that meet the needs and changing interests of Wentworth students, the Athletics Department annually reviews interest and participation across the university.

This review concluded there has been a significant decrease in the level of student interest and participation in women's tennis and men's rowing. As a result, these programs will be discontinued at the end of the 2022 spring season. This difficult decision was reached after careful deliberation.

Wentworth is committed to working with the student-athletes affected by this decision and acknowledges the importance of participating in athletics. We are identifying possible recreational options for students interested in women's tennis. Additionally, we will work to explore club sport opportunities for men's rowing and offer these student-athletes memberships to local rowing organizations at Wentworth's expense. We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and staff members who gave so much to these programs.

Wentworth is committed to supporting a robust student-athlete experience. These decisions enable us to support more student-athletes and the greater Wentworth student body by investing in programs and experiences that have steadily increasing demand:

  • We will be reviewing our current offerings in club sports, fitness, recreation, and wellness with the goal of expanding programs to meet the evolving interests and needs of students. To drive these changes, recreation and club sports will move under the leadership of Mike Williams, Director of Fitness and Wellness.
  • We will establish a comprehensive leadership development program for student-athletes, led by Assistant Athletic Director for Leadership and Student Success/Head Women's Soccer Coach, Meredith Carey.
  • We will transition the part-time track and field coach to a full-time status to support the expansion of the women's and men's cross country and track and field programs. Part-time softball coach, Erica Castro, will also transition from part-time to full-time status. This transition to a full-time coaching model within these programs will help us recruit, retain, and support increased student participation in cross country, track and field, and softball.

We believe these changes will substantially improve the experience for more student-athletes and enable us to increase the club, recreational sports and fitness offerings for the entire student body.
