Campbell Strikes Out Nine as Baseball Splits with Vassar

AUBURNDALE, Florida – The Wentworth Institute of Technology split a pair of games against Vassar to stand at 3-1 after two days at the RussMatt Invitational. The Leopards defeated the Brewers, 4-2, in the opener, before falling in the nightcap, 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Vassar wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore Reid Lapekas (McKiney, Texas) led off the game with a home run. The lead held until the bottom of the second inning when Wentworth evened the game at 1-all. Senior Kyle Desjardins (North Granby, Conn.) led off with a single and went to second on a error when sophomore Ayrton DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and sophomore Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.) grounded out to score Desjardins.
  • The Leopards added a pair of runs in the fourth inning when sophomore Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second when Desjardins grounded out. Peruzzi moved to third on a ground out by DiPina and scored on a wild pitch. Putney doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch before sophomore Matt Rice (Scottsdale, Ariz.) doubled him in. Wentworth added a run in the fifth inning when senior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning and used three wild pitches to come around to score.
  • Vassar threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Junior Nick Greenhawt (Heber City, Utah) led off with a single and went to third on a junior Adam Talwalkar (Lexington, K.Y.) double. Sophomore Jaden Millstein (Margate, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Greenhawt to make it 4-2, however, senior Jacob Knowles (Concord, N.H.) induced a game-ending groundout.
  • Junior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up the win (1-0), allowing one run on five hits and striking out nine. Knowles notch hist first save of the season, allowing one run on two hits in the seventh.

Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Matt Silvia (L, 0-1; 2.1 IP, 4 runs (2 earned), 3 strikeouts).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Vassar scored three times. Freshman Michael Lee (Mercer Island, Wash.) had an RBI single, which scored freshman Finn Kaplan-Moore (New York, N.Y.). Millstein tried to score behind him but was gunned down at the plate by senior Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.). Sophomore Jack Silvera (Los Angeles, Calif.) delivered an RBI single, Lee scored on a wild pitch, and junior Andrew Kanellis (Burke, Va.) scored on a passed ball.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the top of the fourth when O'Neill hit a one-out single, went to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a double from Peruzzi. DiPina grounded out to bring O'Neill in. The Brewers got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Millstein hit a one-out home run to make it 5-1 and added a single run in the fifth when Silvera homered.In the fifth inning, Millstein attempted a sacrifice fly which would have scored freshman Daniel Laderman (Tel Aviv, Israel), but McManus throw him out at the plate.
  • The Black & Gold put up two in the sixth to make it 6-3. Senior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and came around to score when O'Neill tripled him in. O'Neill scored on an RBI single from Peruzzi.
  • Freshman Matt Silvia (Fall River, Mass.) made his collegiate debut, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and striking out three in 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Clayton Harper (Somerset, Mass.), freshman Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.), and freshman Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) also saw time on the mound.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the first two meetings between the two schools.
