Baseball Takes Two from MCLA

AUBURNDALE, Florida – Ayrton DiPina had four hits, which included two doubles and a triple, and drove in five runs, while Brodi Farinas and Brandon Sullivan each improved to 2-0 on the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team swept MCLA. The Leopards rallied to take game one, 5-3, before rolling to a 14-5 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MCLA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ausin Rachiele led off with a walk and stole second. He moved to third on a single from Randy Adams and came home on a sacrifice fly from Isiah Mack sacrifice fly. Wentworth took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Kyle Desjardins led off with a walk and scored on a DiPina triple. DiPina scored on a throwing error.
  • The Trailblazers tied the game at 2-all in the top of the fourth as Robinson Guerrero-Bae led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on two Leopard errors. An inning later, MCLA took a 3-2 lead on an RBI double from Rob Correira, scoring Mack who had hit a two-out double.
  • Wentworth took the lead for good in the home half of the fifth. Nolan Freeman and Kyle O'Neill each reached on singles and Christian Peruzzi reached on a fielder's choice where O'Neill was safe on an error to load the bases. Kyle Desjardins drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a DiPina single, which scored O'Neill and Peruzzi scored on an error on the play.
  • DiPina was 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Freeman and O'Neill each had two hits. Farinas improved to 2-0, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits, and struck out seven in six innings. Jon Campbell picked up his first save of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Freeman and O'Neill drew back-to-back walks with one out and Desjardins drew a two-out walk to load the bases. DiPina walked with the bases loaded and Nolan McManus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to account for the runs. An inning later the Leopards made it 6-0 when O'Neill had an RBI double, Desjardins had an RBI single, and DiPina had a two-run double.
  • MCLA made it 6-2 in the home half of the inning with Josh Bologh driving in a run with a sacrifice fly and Rachiele drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • The fifth inning saw the Black & Gold break the game open with seven runs, two of which came from an Aidan French single two came on Desjardins' first home run of the season, and Ryan Putney drove in two with a double. Matt Masciadrelli scored on a wild pitch to round out the scoring.
  • Wentworth added a run in the sixth when Jake Prisco grounded out to score Putney. MCLA scored three in the bottom of the sixth on a Bologh home run.
  • Desjardins went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. French was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and DiPina drove in three. Sullivan improved to 2-0 allowing two runs on three hits, and striking out eight in five innings.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the first two meetings between the two schools.
