Baseball Runs Win Streak to Four with Sweep of Fitchburg State

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Juniors Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) and Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) both remained undefeated, combining to strike out 20 batters over 12 innings as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team ran its win streak to four with a sweep of Fitchburg State. The Leopards rallied to win game one, 14-8, and completed the sweep with a 10-3 win in the nightcap.

With the wins, the Leopards improve to 8-2 on the season, matching their best start since the 2013 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth got out of an early jam as Fitchburg State had runners on first and second with two outs, however, Sullivan got a fly out to end the inning. An inning later the Falcons took advantage of three Leopard errors, scoring four times to take a 4-0 lead. Three of those runs came on a Connor Morehouse triple.
  • Starting with a line out to end the second, Sullivan set down the next 11 Fitchburg batters and, in the fifth inning, the Black & Gold got on the board with the pair of runs, slicing the deficit in half. Back-to-back double from Nolan McManus and Matt Rice put runners on first and second and Aidan French grounded out to drive in McManus, Nolan Freeman followed with a single to plate Rice.
  • After Fitchburg State used back-to-back doubles to score a run in the top of the sixth, Wentworth exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the inning, an inning that saw the Black & Gold send 16 batters to the plate. Highlighting the 12-run explosion was an RBI single from Rice, an RBI single from Freeman, a bases load hit by pitch from Ayrton DiPina, a two run double from French, and four RBI from Matt Masciadrelli, with three coming on a two-out, bases-loaded double.
  • The Falcons put three across in the top of the seventh, with the help of a pair of Wentworth errors and had the bases loaded with two outs but Jacob Knowles got a groundout to end the game.
  • Freeman, Kyle O'Neill, a Rice each had a pair of hit for Wentworth. Masciadrelli drove in four, French drove in here, and Freeman drove in two. Sullivan improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing one earned run and striking out a career-high 11 batters in six innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After both teams failed to score in the first two and a half innings, Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the third. Ryan Putney drew a one-out walk and went to second on a Masciadrelli single. French drew a walk and, when Putney was going to third, an error allowed him to come in to score. An inning later the Black & Gold put up three runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Putney reached on an error, allowing all three baserunners to score.
  • Wentworth added four to its total in the fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead. O'Neill doubled in French who had led off being hit by a pitch, Peruzzi hit a single to score O'Neill, Kyle Desjardins hit an RBI double to plate Peruzzi and DiPina singled in Desjardins.
  • The top of the sixth inning saw the Falcons score three time to trim the lead to 8-3, with a two-run single from Vincent Eramo and an RBI bunt from Jaime Velez accounting for the scoring. The Leopards scored two times in the home half of the inning with O'Neill scoring when Peruzzi reached on an error and DiPina driving in Peruzzi.
  • Campbell improved to 2-0, allowing three runs on five hits and matching a career-high with nine strikeouts. Desjardins and DiPina had two hits each and combined to drive in three runs.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • The 24th and 25th all-time meetings between the two programs, Wentworth has won the last four and five of the last six to lead, 14-11.
