Baseball Sweeps Maine Farmington to Improve to 10-3

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Juniors Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) and Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) improved to 4-0 and 3-0, respectively, and senior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) collected four hits on the day, going 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, three runs scored, and four runs bated in as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team (10-3) swept Maine Farmington (0-7), 13-3, and 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • On the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning, graduate student Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead when he hit his first home run of the season. With the bases loaded and one out, senior Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) grounded out, which scored senior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) who was hit by a pitch two batters after French's home run. The Leopards added two in the second when French was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a home run from Freeman.
  • After Farmington scored a pair of runs in the top of the third on a two-run single from senior Riley Bartell (Portland, Maine), the Leopards scored five times in the bottom of the inning to break the game open. Senior Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.) had an RBI single, French drew a bases loaded walk, Freeman delivered a two-run single, and French scored on an error.
  • Wentworth added four in the bottom of the fifth, three of which came on a bases-loaded double from sophomore Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.), which scored three, and freshman Nick McGourthy (Middleboro, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with e bases loaded. The Beavers got an RBI single from sophomore Derek Gendreau (Hampden, Maine) in the top of the seventh.
  • Sullivan improved to 4-0, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out nine. Freeman went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and four RBI, Peruzzi was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while French reached base safely three times and drove in two.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Farmington got on the board in the top of the first inning , thanks to a two-run single from freshman Tyler Lambert (Lyman, Maine). An inning later, the Black & Gold tied the game at 2-all as senior Justin Kirst (Boston, N.Y.) led off with a walk and went to third on a one-out single from sophomore Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.). Sophomore Matt Rice (Scottsdale, Ariz.) drove in Kirst with a sacrifice fly and Putney scored on a double from French.
  • The Beavers had the bases loaded with one out in the third inning, however, Campbell induced an inning-ending double play to keep the game tied. In the bottom of the inning, Freeman reached on an error and with one out, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Peruzzi walked and stole second and Kirst walked to load the bases. McManus drove in O'Neill with a sacrifice fly, giving Wentworth a 3-2 lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Farmington threatened to tie the game, loading the bases with one out by way of a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. A low, sinking liner was hit towards right center where Freeman came up with a sliding catch and doubled the runner off second to end the inning. The home half of the inning saw the Leopards have runners on second and third with two outs, however, a strikeout ended the inning.
  • The Beavers had one last chance in the seventh inning, putting runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) induced Wentworth's third double play of the game, sealing the win for the Black & Gold.
  • Freeman had two of Wentworth's five hits, while Kirst drew three walks. Campbell improved to 3-0, pitching five-plus innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four. Farinas picked up his first collegiate save, throwing two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • The first meetings since the 2010 season, Wentworth now leads 3-0.
